Being in service, I guess, a question
So, I've been "toying" with the idea of enlisting for years now. All I am eligible for is NG or AR, if I did, what should I be looking out for, considering and so on? I only have these two options, so, any advice, a word of wisdom, blah blah blah, would help.

If you have construction skills try Reserve Seabees. If not they will teach you... 0 -
Was billeted in the same building as the Seabees (Old French Foreign Leigon fort), in Vietnam. As they were rotating stateside, DEROS, there was talk about them forming their own construction company. Guess they had the financial backing/connections. Joe 0 -
Main difference between the 2 you listed is:
NG - The govenor of the state as well as the president may activate you.
AR - Only a presidetial order can activate you.
Meaning if there is a state of emergency in your state then you may be activated for it if you are in the National Gaurd. This can happen in the Army Reserves too but it is much more rare.0 -
Also a point to remember!
If you are only eligable for those 2 because of education requirements you can enlist in one of them and after you complete basic and advance training and come home you can spend 6 months in your reserve position and then you are eligable to reenlist into active duty.[;)]0 -
I misspoke, Army and Army National Guard is what I am eligible for. I am leaning towards reserve and NG.

The National Guard is mostly a "reserve" outfit, but there are full time National Guardsmen too. The Navy has a reserve deal called TAR (Training Administrative Reserve) which is full time, but I think you have to have done some Regular Navy time to get into that. Check them all out and see which one fits. 0 -
Reserve, guard, or active plan on going somewhere hot if you sign the papers. You'd be amazed at how many 40+ year old reservists/guardsman I met over there. I'm sure you know that , though. 0
