Gun shop salesman rant
Stopped into one of the local gun shops today to buy some mags. 50 year old or so salesman is trying to talk a 20 year old or so guy into buying an M1A. Salesman says "This is what the Marines now use in Iraq. They rebarreled all their's to .308 just like this one so that they can shoot further." I asked him what caliber did they rebarrel their's from? He say "From 30-06, the .308 is much better." I say "I have never seen a 30-06 M1A. Think you can order me one?" He says "Sure, just put a 30% deposit down and we will order it." I leave.

[8D]--Please forgive my Non experience with the M1A, but my memory says the M1 Garand first was provided in the 30-06 first part of WW 11-then the receiver was modified (shortened) to accomodate the .308 --shorter and lighter--then redesignated the M 14--Thats about all I know about it--

The .308 Garand with 20 rd box magazine is called the Beretta BM-59.
The M14, while a child of the M-1, has more improvements than just the additional mag capacity.
I have never heard of a MilSpec M-1 Garand chambered in .308. I have seen one-off custom jobs in that caliber. The .308 offers no ballistic advantages over the .30-06.

Sorta kinda, but not really The WWII era M1 Garand is a 30-06 that uses an 8 round clip that self ejects when empty (the familiar PING! sound). After WWII the Army did this big study and decided that 300 yards of fire was about the max that was needed so they looked for a shorter 30 caliber round that would fulfill that requirement and a rifle with more capacity to shoot it out of. The M-14 shooting the 7.62x51 round using a 20 round detachable magazine was eventually accepted by the military after the Korean War. (And we then shoved the 7.62x51 round down most of NATO's throats and then dumped it shortly after for the 5.56 but that is another story.) The actions of the M1 and the M-14 are very similar. The M-14 and the semi version M1A was never chambered in 30-06. The salesman was just full of it.0 -

What PC800 neglects to mention is that the rest of what became NATO really wanted a 280ish caliber in a shorter cartridge (led mostly by the british commonwealth). 308/762Nato was the settlement there, but the rifle selection was up in the air. Most everyone else chose the FAL -Spain and then Germany with teh CETME followed by G3/hk91/licensed cetme) being the exceptions - (but Germany had G1 FALs for a while before selling to Turkey), and while the FAL was tried here in the US (as the T48), politics, desire for a US designed/made weapon, etc. the M14 was selected in the end... 0 -

Correct...but it even starts earlier than that. Garand's original rifle design was of .276 caliber (IIRC), but the Army forced him to redesign it to take the 30-06 cartridge. So...if he had been allowed to stay with the .276, then that had been shortened to fit the M-14 action, we could have been using basically the great 7mm-08 all these years instead of the 5.56mm.0 -

First rifle I ever shot was a M-1 Garand in 30-06. That was at Ft. Knox in 1963. Man have times changed! 0 -
seems like there are a few jackass gun shop owners, i went to one place and asked for a shell holder, anyone who reloads should be familiar, he treats me like im some kind of teenage idiot, i did get it after 5 mins. of him being a dick, i really wish i would have just walked away and got it somewhere else 0 -
There is at least one M14 in 30-06 out there somewhere. In the early 1960s there was a collector of US military arms who had an outstanding collection. He had at least one of everything and dozens of some things. He had shot at Camp Perry, been on the Marine Corp team, etc. Well, it really bothered him that his collection and shooting experience was incomplete. He didn't have an M14 and the gov. wasn't about to sell him one. He was also quite a machinist so he just made one. However, he really didn't think the .308 was a good idea, so he scaled it up a bit and made it 30-06. He passed away several years ago and I never did learn what happened to the rifle. I just hope that it found a good home. 0 -
We have had a garrand in 308 in the store once.....I did good to sell that one before Larry saw it! He is a bit of a military gun nut. I have my moments when things get all twisted up in my head. I would laugh, but when you mess with as many guns each and every day....mistakes happen. He was just probobly thinking one thing while saying another. I can't wait until I'm a bit older and can blame it on age....and not the insanity/overworked brain of mine. 0 -

Had one back in WV that hired young people (m&f) that were knowitalls. I went there to buy a cheap soft holster to fit a j frame.
(the hammer wears a hole in em every couple of years and starts stabbin me in the flab)
the salesman tried his best to convince me that I really wanted a "tactical" rig. Was scornful about what I wanted. I ended up buying it elsewhere. It was the scorn that did it! I don't have a problem with someone trying to make a more profitable sale but they should know when to shut up!
Anyone with a "superior" type attitude should never try to make it in sales! Even if you do know more than the prospective buyer you still gotta make him think its his idea. Ever hear of anyone saying guess what
