Okay... I have a confession to make...
... I am a closet M16/AR-15 fan.
I went to Vegas this past weekend (I suppose that makes it last week since the weekend is upon us) and rented an M16A2 at one of those ranges that rents out machine guns.
I've fired a Thompson before (didn't care for it - please don't kill me), so I decided to try something different.
So I went for the M16 since the ammo was cheaper than for the AK47.
200 rounds later and I must admit - I am in love. "Lust" even.
Even on full auto the thing was a dream to handle. Well-balanced, controllable recoil, and accurate (well, as accurate as auto fire gets - I didn't do too badly). Not a single hiccup. The only issue I had was the thing spat a bunch of gun oil all over me and made me look like a leopard for the better part of the day (short sleeves and no access to industrial-strength soap = long-term stains), but for that amount of fun I had, I'd have gladly endured a kick in the nuts (well, maybe not that far, but you get my point).
Now obviously my thoughts have turned towards buying an AR-15. I might get one of those gas piston uppers since they're supposed to be cleaner and don't affect performance.
But I'd just like to say that after having bad-mouthed the AR in past posts (and even if you don't remember it, I do), I must now eat crow and state, unequivocally, that not only was I wrong, I was DEAD WRONG.

When I was trained on the M-16A1, for full auto, squeeze the trigger, when you hear the buffer spring, release the trigger and you will have fired a 3-5 rd burst[:D]

If it sprayed oil all over you, it was too wet. Those things will function flawlessly when they're bone dry. 0 -

No let's not go there. It's good to see someone try something they criticized in the past, and finally "see the light".
I have shot the M-16 in the past, but since I have a single shot shotgun that eats about 10,000 rounds a year, I would not buy something that eats ammo at those rates.
I'll simply be happy with my AR-15s.0 -

It set me back about $170 (a little less, but that's tax included). A bit much for 200 rounds that lasted about ten minutes or so, but a heckuva lot cheaper than actually buying a transferable M16 and more fun than being robbed at the slots![:D]0 -

I have never fired a fully auto gun, but I like the AR15 and have owned an early SP1 since about 1979. I find it very fun to shoot and I would have no qualms at all about using such a rifle in combat. It's a short-range, anti-personnel caliber not meant for 2,000 yard shots or breaking engine blocks but that's what it was designed to be. 0 -

If you get the chance again, try an MP-5. Even more controllable than the M-16. Yes, it's only a pistol caliber, but it is one SWEET shooting gun.
Enjoy the AR when you get it.

For years I scoffed at the M16/AR15 family. I swore I would never own one. Then I shot one for the first time and I was hooked. Welcome to the "DARK" side EMM...[:D][;)] 0 -

A friend of mine bought an AK. His first time out with it, I brought my cousin's AR. He just bought the AK and was in love with the AR.
He had his own Colt about two months later. No comparison.0 -

I owned an AK once upon a time - sold it 'cause I didn't care for it. I much prefer the SKS as far as commie guns go.0 -

The AK I had was a Romanian one and it just didn't do it for me. I didn't care for the stamped metal parts, the poor balance, or its inherent inaccuracy even at shorter ranges. The SKS's I've shot seem just as robust, the Norinco ones have milled receivers; and once you get used to them, stripper clips have a certain charm all their own. The SKS also handles a bit better, in my opinion, especially the so-called "paratrooper" models made by Norinco.0 -
Ok, I respect that..try a better AK..like a Hungarian or a pre 89 Chinese, and you may change your mind...
OTOH, a good SKS (full size mind you)is a great rifle IMHO..0
