First CCW shooting in Kansas?

One Suspect Shot Attempting to Rob Store, Other Flees

We have an update to a shooting we first told you about Friday night.
The victim of the shooting was actually trying to rob the Phillips 66 at 2525 29th St.
Two suspects were holding up the owner of the store, Dean Yee, with a handgun.
A man in the store, 57-year-old Michael Mah, drew a firearm and told one of the suspects to drop his weapon before shooting the 17-year-old.
Mah had a valid concealed carry permit from Oklahoma.
The firearm the robbery suspect used was found to be stolen.
The 17-year-old suspect was treated at a local hospital before being transferred to a Kansas City hospital. He is now in stable condition.
The second suspect was last seen running South on Randolph Street from 29th Street. He is described as an Hispanic male, 18 years of age, wearing a black coat, white t-shirt, red doo-rag and blue jeans.
Police continue to investigate and ask anyone with information to call Detective Kent Biggs at 368-9412 or Crime Stoppers at 234-0007.

I've noticed a lot of stores in Texas display signs saying "no UNLICENSED firearms allowed."
That's at least one state in the Union that has its thinking cap on.[:D]0 -

Kinda depends on the individual.
People that complain about others not wanting to get involved have already locked in their votes. No wiggle room there.
The big talkers on the other hand can claim since "he" wasn't being robbed, no he should not have pulled it out.
The liberals can claim no one would have gotten shot if he hadn't pulled his private gun. The benign thief would have just taken the money and left.
The big city cops will claim most people should not risk confronting a gun welding criminal and just do as he says.
That only leaves store owners and people who want to piss off the wussies to pull guns on bad guys![;)][:p]0 -

In my CCW class we were told we could defend ourselves or someone else ...
... on the down side, I don't think we're reciprocal with any other state.
It'll be interesting to see how this plays out ... I know several people that have beat the drum for CCW, but now are hesitant to get one or "just waiting to see how it goes" ... I'm just waiting on my license to get here [:)]0 -

Excellent but I hate how they referred to the robber as a "victim" the media writers need to choose more responsible words.0 -
I think he absolutely did the right thing. He did not just pull his gun out and start shooting, he told the criminal to drop his gun first...evidently he did not comply. Kimberkid has it right, I also was told the same thing in my CCW class. You can defend others as well as yourself. 0 -
You should never ask a life-threatening criminal to drop a weapon or freeze or whatever, just shoot them if they are threatening someone's life.
true story: In oregon, there was a security guard in a mall that saw a man robbing an old woman at knife point at an atm. The guard said something like "freeze" or "stop" and drew and shot the robber as the robber turned to run away therefor shooting the robber in the back. The guard got i think it was 5 years for homicide (shooting the robber while he was retreating). The cops AND prosecutor both confided that the guard should have just shot the criminal without saying anything. It would have been a totally justified and legal shooting.0 -

I didn't look up Kansas law, but according to packing.org Kansas does NOT have reciprocity with ANY other state, concerning CCW. Wonder if they will nail Mah on that?0 -

Being a CCW holder in Oklahoma and the limited knowledge of laws concerning CCW.

Kansas has not yet decided who they will reciprocate with.
It'll be interesting to see which way this one goes. on one hand he foiled a robbery and looks like a hero in the public eye. On the other hand he could be charged with anything from CC without a proper license to criminal use of a firearm, to attempted murder.0 -

A situation involving guns, violent criminals and legal carriers of guns turned out as it should. Sadly, the liberals hate this type of thing for a reason totally unknown to me. 0 -
I heard yesterday that no charges will be filed aginst Mr. Mah because Kansas is now a CCW state ... last month he would have been in trouble.
Secondly, Kansas is going to grant reciprocity with all other states that have training equal to what Kansas requires ... but I've not seen that list yet.

Wow I thought the Oklahoma part would be brought up in the first or second reply. This guy will be sweating it out for a time until the higher ups decide what to do with or about him.

Kansas' reciprocity with other states was announced the day before this incident. And Oklahoma is on the list, so he's clear in that regard. 0 -
