I need to run some REPEL BOARDERS drills (a rant)
About two o'clock this morning (Saturday) my fearless protector, Champ, a blue eyed forty pound Australian Shepherd let it be known she wanted to go outside. We went to the basement and I had my hand on the doorknob to let her out when I heard something in the dog lot that sounded like a portable CB radio. Being the sharp and alert young man that I am, I decided that wasn't right, so I didn't open the door.
I went back up topside, woke the wife, and told her what was going on. She said "OK", and turned back over to go back to sleep. I woke her again and told her the dog still had to go out. She said "OK", and turned back over to go back to sleep. I woke her again and said "You really ain't going to help me, are you?" She said "What do you want me to do?!!", and turned back over to go back to sleep. I told her it would be nice if she would back me up while I took the dog out. She said "Back you up with what?!!" I told her a gun would be nice. "Where's my gun?!!" I told her it would most likely be where she put it, but I would let her use a .357 if she wanted to. "NO! I'd rather use my own." Then she wanted to know how you back somebody up. I told her to watch while I opened the door, and if somebody shot or attacked me, to shoot the son-of-a-gripe.
About half way down the steps I got to thinking I might be better off without backup, and reminded her to keep her finger off the trigger until she was ready to shoot. She said "Do you think I'm stupid?!!" I didn't answer that question.
When I opened the door, as soon as it was open far enough for the dog to get her head out, she poked her head out, jumped back and ran and got behind the wife. I open the door all the way and told Champ to get her butt outside. She went streight to the gate and didn't make a sound, but every hair on her neck and butt were standing streight up. After a couple of minutes I told her "that's enough" and told her to do what she wnent out for. She went to the middle of the dog lot, did her business, and made a blue streak back into to basement and back up topside.
All in all, it was a pretty piss poor performance by all personnel present. As it turned out, there was nothing to be concerned about, but I didn't know that. I think I might have to run a few drills. Prior proper planning prevents piss poor performance.
