Anyone ever play with Night Vision?

I have what I believe is a Gen 1 Monocular and all I had ever heard about thew Gen 1 is that they are junk.

I am amazed at how well I can see in total darkness.
I can see detail 70-80 yards away and just walked through my woods in total darkness with vision that is better than a flashlight.
This thing is cool.

    I use to have a set of ANPVS 7B's. They were nice, but as life goes, I needed money for something and sold them.

    Yeah i still don't really know what a porusefull use would be for it but it sure is cool.

    A buddy of mine has a 4x Gen 1 scope on a varmiter used for coyotes, and we have a set of Gen 4 ATN googles at work. The Gen 4 is like night and day compared to the gen 1. I was impressed with how well a Gen 1 worked until I used the Gen 4 googles, and then I was amazed at the Gen 4 performance over the gen 1.

    One time at the local National Guard base I was able to play with the latest and greatest with the IR sighting device on the M16 and I know what you mean about the clarity in the new night vision.
    It was hard for me to see that sighting beam targeted on something and not think anyone else could see it except those who had the night vision on.

    In force on force training all of those IR devices make the woods look like a star wars battle!

    Yes, while out at sea in the Coast Guard. First off, when you're in pitch black in the middle of the ocean you see soooo many stars with the naked eye.... then with night vision looking up, you see more, and there's too many to count! Also, the stacks of the ship look like they have green flames shooting out of them when seen through night vision. [:)]

    I owned a gen 1 Starlight observation scope(big and heavy with about a 75MM objective) that was superb. It was made by an outfit in Texas. But like sarge_3ad I sold it for some reason - this was about 1979.

    A few years ago, wifey got me a Russian IR monocular with an attached "illuminator" light.

    I don't like the IR technology. The Starlight image intensifier seemed to be way better than the Russian IR.

    I'd like to get a thermal scope, but the ones available to me don't have very good resolution, and are VERY expensive.

    I guess I'll save for another G1 or G2 Starlight.

    You want to see something cool, switch on the night vision, pick up your remote control, and you can see the IR light. I've used one for a flashlight before.

    i used a vomz pns 4.6 x52 ,(russian) weighs in a heafty 1.1kg but with good infa red lamp (small torch) attached , its superb on all mamals to 75 yds.....total dark!! you be amaised at what ya see.

    the yukons, & alike under gen 2 are [xx(]..

    While I had an ATN Generation 2+ on top my HK 91 coyotes were fun to shoot. Found out a .22 rimfire ( 22 mag ) was the largest cal. one could shoot in SC at night. Bummer. I sold it. I could see on a moonlit night 300 yd. On a dark night 200yd.

    Played with? No. Used them during actual military ops? yes. 7A's and 14A's. I perfered the 14's I saw better with them than the monocular of the 7's. My last pair were so clear I actually had some depth perception.

    I live in an area that was until a couple years ago considered country, and I have both monocular, and binocular night vision, the monocular lense, like you say is fun I don't think its really a tool like the Gen4 binocular units. the monocular is great for watching animals and stars and such. but try running through the woods with them and you will quickley see the difference the binocular are relly a tool in stalking, and/or hunting.
    If you want to see something really cool, shoot a tracer round while using. and maybe have some pink floyd on you I-Pod.
    Unfortunatly I now have a new neighbor who has installed street lights on his property, boy would I like to stalk him through the woods some night. He has single handedly ruined the charactor of our little slice of heaven, and yes I have tried talking to them and tried being friends, but you know you can only bend so far untill your grabbing your ankles, and cring SOOOUUUIIEEE.
    Now i got to go take a Valium and calm down.

    Had an opportunity to shoot while wearing a pair. Don't recall what brand. The night sights on the HK were so bright that you could hardly get them lined up, but when you touched off a round.......WOW.....couldn't see anything for a little while.

    A buddy of mine has a 4th generation FLIR monocular, which clamps on the picatinny rail behind the EOTech sight on either his SOCOMII, or his AR flat tops. it is incredible.
