'Cannonball' driver burned across US in 31 hours Fri Nov 16, 4:48 PM ET
WASHINGTON (AFP) - Extreme sports fan Alex Roy said Friday he had smashed the record for the fastest "Cannonball run" across the United States, defying police and speed traps.
Alex Roy, 35, who waited a year to boast about his exploits and remains vague about the exact dates in a bid to avoid any prosecution, said he had blistered across 13 states in 31 hours and 4 minutes, breaking the old record by more than an hour.
Car enthusiast and rally driver Roy travelled the 4,496 kilometers (2,794 miles) from New York on the East Coast to Santa Monica, California, on the West Coast at an average 145 kilometers (95 miles) an hour.
At times though he reached top speeds of 257 kilometers (160 miles) an hour, breaking the previous record set in 1983 of 32 hours and 17 minutes.
The American driver of German origin set the record at the wheel of his blue BMW stamped with "Team Polizei" and traveled with a cameraman to document the event.
He also equipped his car with several GPS units, police scanners and radar detectors in a bid to avoid any speed traps.
"The GPS really is not that useful because there is only four tolls and maybe four turns between New York and LA. This is purely to calculate our speed and time," he told a television reporter.
He added that normally he's a very careful driver who has only been given one speeding ticket in the past five years.

31 hrs. is fantastic....I made Paulsboro NJ. to Jupiter Fl. In 16.5 hrs.
1122Mi. In 1978. Before I 95 was complete. In an AMC "sport about" wagon.
300 cid. 6 banger, 3-speed auto. "double-Nickels" was the law, back then...[8D]0 -
My best time ever on a trip was between Sunnyvale CA and Mobile AL, 2499 miles. 33 hours and that includes 4 hours sleep in New Mexico. Hopped on I-5 and got on I-10 in LA. Straight shot.
The automobile was a '73 Ford Pinto![:p]0 -

Dateline: Clearwater, FL. 11:00AM topped off fuel. Started trip.
Drove through the night, Northbound.
Arrived at the Goethals' Bridge (Btwn NJ-NYC) at daybreak next day.
Equipment: '69 VW sedan (bug). It was before the 55mph nationwide restriction. Fuel tankage/engine consumption combo saved me from at least two refuelling stops en route.
That VW trip was my [in time] shortest run from mid. FL to NYC.
Sidenote: I become "mesmerized" on the road. Won't stop. Don't feel the urge to pee/dump till I get out of the car during refueling stops. I used to be able to go tank-to-tank during my long trips. Joe0 -
19 hours, 22 minutes, from Ontario, California, to Gig Harbor Washington - 1032 miles, Solo, in a Chevy Pick-up.
I'm proudest of San Diego to El Paso in 24 hours, on a motorcycle - serious case of sore butt, never again to repeat it.0 -
It's doable but only without sleep.
AS long distance motorcycle rider and member of the Iron Butt Association i did the coast to coast ride from literally the Atlantic Ocean in Jacksonville Beack Florida to the Pacific Ocean in San Diedgo Cal. in 46 hours and 57 minutes and still slept for six hours on the first day in Ozona Texas which was 1300 miles from the Atlantic Ocean.
I also among many other rides did the 1500 mile ride in less than 24 hours(Bun Burner Gold).
Acyually it was a certified 1530 miles in 23 hours and 12 minutes.

In an 89 Corvette I once drove from Lawton OK to Topeka KS in four hours. 378 miles in four hours averages out to 94mph. Top speed on that trip was 155mph. The motor was stock except for bolt ons like full race exhaust, no smog equipment, free flow intake, high performance ignition, pumped up fuel pressure, performance computer chip, and 1x1.6 full roller rockers. Had the AC on the whole time! No tickets thanks to a Valentine One.[;)] 0
