Brass in my face
I almost hijacked another thread with this one but thought better of it.
New (150 rounds through it) Dan Wesson Commander Bobtail 1911 kicks about 10% of the brass back into my face. It scratched my brand new glasses today and although that's better than brass on my cornea, I am not amused. I'm still not sure if I'm going to pop $50 to get the scratched lens replaced again.
Is this me or the gun? It's a small (4.25" barrel) .45 and the largest caliber handgun I've shot, so I know sometimes I still limp-wrist it a bit.
If it's me, how do I train myself out of this problem.
If it's the gun, how do I fix it?

The 1911 is supposed to put hot brass down the back of your neck. 0 -
When I shoot my dad's 1911 it does the same to me, so it must be the gun. If you want to shoot brass into the faces of other people though, get a Beretta 92FS. Those shells went all over the place today and everyone walking behind me surely got hit with them. Made it hard to save the brass for reloading, but it is always fun to shoot while brass is flying everywhere. 0 -
You may be able to alter the geometry of the factory ejector. Maybe not. 0 -
i had a colt that did that, sent it back and they changed the ejector and extractor or they adjusted not sure which, as it had both changed and adjusted written on the note they sent me saying what they were doing with it. but now the shells fly straight up or to the right like they should. either send it back or take to a gunsmith 0 -
FWIW, my PM9 throws brass all over my head, into my shirt pocket, down the back of my shirt, etc. The good news is that I don't flinch from the hot brass down my shirt but on occasion, the brass goes into the lane next to me. I usually apologize to the shooter unless he or she is throwing brass at me.[:D] 0 -

Well, somewhere between your response and Joker's response (immediately before yours) is the answer, I think. I actually don't mind hot brass flying at me (and I did pick a couple casings out of my shirt-pocket), but I do mind when hot brass scratches my glasses...because after four years those glasses become pretty scratched up even without the help of a 1911.
I'll inquire with the manufacturer. If they'll look at it for free, I'm cool with that. Then I'll inquire with a gunsmith. If they'll look at it for <$50, I'm cool with that. Otherwise I'll just spend the $10 on a pair of racquetball goggles and wear them when I'm using this gun at the range. And if this gun ever comes out in a defensive situation, I don't think I'll care.0 -
I cant comment on that gun, but I do knoe none of the Kimbers I've ever shot did that.
BTW, while yes that's anoying, have you ever gotten hot brass from a 240 dropped down the back of your shirt in a HMMWV? Really sucks when you're wearing all your kit, and can't stop to dig it out. OWWWWWWWWWWWW0 -

No, I've never been that unfortunate. I've been fortunate enough that all I have to gripe about is a little scratch on my glasses. And maybe it's a good thing I need those glasses, because although I routinely use hearing protection, I doubt I'd use eye protection if I didn't need it to see 20/20. I do count my blessings.

hot brass is good. it teaches you not to flinch. its a right of passage.[8D] 0 -
shoot a revolver then you don't have that problem 
can't really help with your probelm other than to say that my Para nor my Ruger P95 does it , they both put the brass out to the side where it belongs0 -

Yep, I agree that that is most likely the problem. Had the same problem with my Springfield compact, it was drawing blood by placing the cases into my forehead and down my glasses into my collar. Nasty little gun. One of many, many problems with that little Brazil made hunk of Junk!0 -
Had the same problem with a Desert Eagle in 44 mag. 0
