Go John Glenn! Is this all true?
Things that make you think a little:
There were 39 combat related killings in Iraq in January.
In the fair city of Detroit there were 35 murders in the
month of January. That's just one American city,
about as deadly as the entire war-torn country of Iraq
When some claim that President Bush shouldn't
have started this war, state the following:
a. F.D.R led us into World War II.
b. Germany never attacked us; Japan did.
From 1941-1945, 450,000 lives were lost ...
an average of 112,500 per year.
c. Truman finished that war and started one in Korea .
North Korea never attacked us.
From 1950-1953, 55,000 lives were lost ..
an average of 18,334 per year.
d. John F Kennedy started the Vietnam conflict in 1962.
Vietnam never attacked us.
e. Johnson turned Vietnam into a quagmire.
From 1965-1975, 58,000 lives were lost ..
an average of 5,800 per year.
f. Clinton went to war in Bosnia without UN or French consent.
Bosnia never attacked us.
He was offered Osama bin Laden's head on a platter three
times by Sudan and did nothing. Osama has attacked us on
multiple occasions.
g. In the years since terrorists attacked us, President Bush
has liberated two countries, crushed the Taliban, crippled al-Qaida,
put nuclear inspectors in Libya , Iran , and North Korea without firing a shot,
and captured a terrorist who
slaughtered 300,000 of his own people.
The Democrats are complaining
about how long the war is taking.
But ..
It took less time to take Iraq than it took Janet Reno
to take the Branch Davidian compound.
That was a 51-day operation.
We've been looking for evidence for chemical weapons
in Iraq for less time than it took Hillary Clinton to find
the Rose Law Firm billing records.
It took less time for the 3rd Infantry Division and the
Marines to destroy the Medina Republican Guard
than it took Ted Kennedy to call the police after his
Oldsmobile sank at Chappaquiddick
It took less time to take Iraq than it took
to count the votes in Florida !!!!
Our Commander-In-Chief is doing a GREAT JOB!
The Military morale is high!
The biased media hopes we are too ignorant
to realize the facts.
But Wait. There's more!

Some people still don't understand why military personnel
do what they do for a living. This exchange between
Senators John Glenn and Senator Howard Metzenbaum
is worth reading. Not only is it a pretty impressive
impromptu speech, but it's also a good example of one
man's explanation of why men and women in the armed
services do what they do for a living.
This IS a typical, though sad, example of what
some who have never served think of the military.
Senator Metzenbaum (speaking to Senator Glenn):
"How can you run for Senate
when you've never held a real job?"
Senator Glenn (D-Ohio):
"I served 23 years in the United States Marine Corps.
I served through two wars. I flew 149 missions.
My plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire on 12 different
occasions. I was in the space program. It wasn't my
checkbook, Howard, it was my life on the line. It was
not a nine-to-five job, where I took my tie off to take the
daily cash receipts to the bank."
"I ask you to go with me ... as I went the other day...
to a veterans' hospital and look those men ..
with their mangled bodies in the eye, and tell THEM
they didn't hold a job!
You go with me to the Space Program at NASA and go, as I have gone,
to the widows and orphans
of Ed White, Gus Grissom, and Roger Chaffee...
and you look those kids in the eye and tell them
that their DADS didn't hold a job.
You go with me on Memorial Day, and you stand in
Arlington National Cemetery , where I have more friends
buried than I'd like to remember, and you watch
those waving flags
You stand there, and you think about this nation,
and you tell ME that those people didn't have a job?
What about you?"
For those who don't remember ..
During W.W.II, Howard Metzenbaum was an attorney
representing the Communist Party in the USA
Now he's a Senator!

We haven`t "taken" Iraq yet. 0 -
I am preety sure George Carlin said all those things.... 0 -
Not true. Whenever ANYTHING like this is attributed to a celebrity, it is ALWAYS false. Please check Snopes. 0 -
One thing I get sick of hearing is "Germany didn't attack us." Let's ignore the Reuben James and similar incidents; Germany declared war on the US on December 11th, 1941. FDR responded by asking the Congress to declare war on Germany. Ergo, Germany declared war on US first. 0 -

Glenn was long gone from the Senate in 2004. Never said anything worthwhile. He got his payback from Clinton and left town...the coward. He turned from hero to zero in my book.0 -

Thank you, jonk.
I have seen this bit of right wing drivel four or five times on this forum alone. They count on the readers having no knowledge of history.
When Hitler declared war on you, you had better take him seriously.
"In the years since terrorists attacked us, President Bush
has liberated two countries"
What bs. Who in their right mind considers Iraq to be a liberated state?
Many think that Iraq was better off under Saddam than the tender mercies of the simpleton Bush.0 -
Well we sunk a U boat in the Gulf of Mexico before any troops even reached germany. 0 -

Hey, that's great. Apparently no Iraqis died in January.0 -

Jonk,
The neutrality policy of the United States was a sham. You speak of the Reuben James. It was on patrol in the North Atlantic covering the gap in British air coverage over convoys. This was while the US was still neutral. The U-boat promply put a torpedo into Reuben James.
Hitler had given the Kriegsmarine specific orders to avoid contact with US forces. Roosevelt gave the Navy Department exactly the opposite orders.
This is why Hitler promply declared war on the US, simply to end the charade.
Here's a very good history:
http://www.reuben-james.net/
This is a particulary interesting paragraph from it:
Americans were so angered by the attack, that Congress passed a bill allowing armed American merchant ships to sail into combat zones. President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed it. Although the United States was not officially at war with Germany, the German government did not apologize for the sinking. Instead, the Germans issued a statement which read: "Anybody walking along the railroad track at night should not be surprised if he gets run over by an express train." What went unmentioned, was that since October 1939, American warships had been actively pursuing U-Boats. A crewman from the U.S.S. Jouett (DD-396) writes; "On October 1, 1939 we, U.S.S. Jouett, started the first North Atlantic patrol. There were two destroyers and two of the large Coast Guard cutters assigned. I can't remember the Coast Guard ship names at this time. We patrolled, one cutter and one destroyer, an area that extended from Boston, straight east to directly south of Iceland. Then north to the same latitude as the top of the Grand Banks off of Newfoundland and then straight West to the Grand Banks. Then southwest to Boston. This took about 30 very stormy days. This was the beginning of Mr. Roosevelt's Private war, which terminated with Pearl Harbor. We made unprovoked attacks on many German and Italian subs under direct orders from the White House. During this time, we were not legally at war. We had positive kills of at least two U-Boats. You will find no record of this in Navy Records - our logs were purged and all message traffic was removed from the ship by order of the White House about three days after the Pearl Harbor attack."0 -
...will one of you mensa IQ folks please tell me just how long a war should last/take?
...Also please tell me where one finds victory in cutting and running/leaving? I can't seem to find victory anywhere in that scenario.
...of course you cant answer either question so you will just blather away with BS nonsense trying to justify your defeatist attitude...while providing great fodder to the terrorist, telling them just what they want to hear...[xx(]

If it is shown that the reasons stated for starting the war were false and misleading and the reasons for continuing the war change as the war progresses, then, is it not reasonable to bring that war to an end as quickly as possible? 0 -

39 soldiers died in Iraq in January? Not quite, 83 American soldiers died in Iraq in the month of January. Now you guys are resorting to bald-face LIES in order to make the war look good?0 -

About 50,000 Iraqis are "liberated" from their bodies each year, does that count? F**k, the body count in Iraq is piling up faster since we "liberated" them than it was under Saddam.0 -

Who thinks that? Ted Kennedy? John Kerry? Mrs. Saddam? You read and believe way too much liberal media puke. How many Iraqis did you survey for this particular bit of information?
You my friend have been snookered by the vast left wing conspiracy...and you don't even know it. Try to think for yourself next time.0 -
