Koi
Yes I raise the question on the fish again. A friend of mine and I were talking about Koi ponds. I am getting the desire to put one in by our back patio. "L" shaped, 1.5' deep on one end 4' deep on the other. Each side of the "L" being about 4-6' long and about 3' wide. About 900 to 1000 gallons all together.
Two questions.
1. How much are young Koi to buy? (say 6-8")
2. Do they take the COLD very well? Winters around here will touch 10 below zero for a few days.
I want to keep it as simple as possible, some aquatic plants in each end, pump, fountain, etc.

I have a koi pond, just introduced 3 to it. Its a mature pond that came with my house. Ive had them for three days and they havent eaten. They are hiding most of the time. Any advice???
Thanks,0 -
they probably have eaten a little you just didnt notice. fish are sneaky like that. like all animals though its going to take some time for them to adjust and feel comfortable. eating is a good indicator of that.
side note - my friend had a pit bull and his neighboors got a koi pond one day. they spent about $1,000 on new fish and the next day the dog ate all the fish.0 -
ergo, don't throw dog food in your fish pond. 0 -
We used to raise Koi in our Koi pond - they are easy to raise - you can buy Koi food commercially and when they are big enough they love table scraps. You'll never see
a Koi starve to death - they love to eat! There are LOTS of Koi sites on the net.

A friend of mine use to work part time at a KOI farm near Camp Pendleton. It was one of the few in the western hemisphere at the time according to him. Back then, the fish were incredibly expensive, and the farm was fenced with four Doberman's taking care of watchman duties. Once the dogs were on leash, my friend would feed the fish. He would stand on the edge of each pond and stomp his foot three times, and within fifteen or twenty seconds the feeding frenzy would begin as the food pellets hit the surface of the water.0 -
Will be watching this thread, and doing research on the side, as I'm
considering putting in one myself.[:)]0 -
