Camel Spider

Forced perspective, they are in fact about 3" long. They are not spiders, though they are often called sun spiders here, not wind scoprions, that is another animal entirely. They are solpugids, have no venom whatever, though large ones can pinch, and they are among the most formidable predators I know of. If one were 8 feet long, it would be the most terrifying animal that ever lived. 0 -

...sorry HeDog, but these things are huge!...with legspans over 1' in diameter. They also have a hard shell like a crab. They crunch when you step on them...just like a crab would do...disgusting creatures!0 -

spent four years in kazahkstan roaming around between the aral and caspain seas, always told people about these camel spiders but everyone thought OH yea good story, showed the wife this thread and she was amazed.
I have poked them with a steel tape measure and their teeth/fangs clicked when they would bite sounded like tin snips although they didn't cut it. I did see camels with large wounds and was told that was where the spiders had eaten on them while laying down sleeping, this would mean they would secrete a numbing substance while they fed, can anyone verify this?
One things for sure they get big and they are fast, hilarious to watch run under the beam of a spot light. And one other thing those white suction cups, I think have something to do with thier eggs, meaning it's a female0 -

While stationed on the Siani I was bitten by one of these hairy buggers. The ground under foot over there is all coral and full of bacteria that combined with the spiders saliva makes for a nasty bite. It was well over seven months before my shin healed.
