Wife wants a Hummer
I am trying like he!! to convince her this is a bad chioce but I'm not getting anywhere. Since midlife she has gotten into this "status symbol" mode and sees a Hummer fitting into this. I personally wouldn't take one if someone gave it to me. They are too big for my tastes along with fuel consumption and maintenance issues. I have told here she is on her own if she wants it. I will have nothing to do with it. No driving, maintenance, washing etc.

What is the resale value of a Hummer? If you have the money and are willing to spend it, there are much better status symbols on four wheels that will earn the "status symbol respect" (if you can call it that) that will be a much higher quality ride with a better resale value. I wouldn't want a status symbol that will be old in a couple of years (since it won't be status symbol anymore after it's a couple years old). I'd look at a barely used Mercedes E-class if I had that kind of money and was willing to go used. 0 -

Honda Pathfinder, Escalade, Navigator, among others if you want to impress folks with a big pricey vehicle. Or, you could try to just not give a rat what other folks think. You are in a no win situation. 0 -
just ask if you can take it out hunting, gas mileage sucks on those, and don't think about putting the cheap stuff in there either, most high end cars you need to put premium in them, although i'm not sure about a hummer though 0 -
People have really missed the mark to consider a hummer as a status symbol. For the same price, show her a Corvette roadster.

Had a 2003 H1 & a 2003 H2 in the fleet owned by the boss's son.
The H1 had every option & was tricked out winches, wheels etc.
Both were slugs, high maintance, low fuel mileage, high maintance, expensive parts, if you can get them, & high maintance.
The H1 cost was $145, sold within the year for $80. Had under 20,000 miles.
Lots of engine, injector, fuel pump problems.
Maybe because it was used as a submarine?
The H2 cost was $64 sold with 18,000 miles for $45.
Transmission out twice, transfer case once.
Did I say any thing about high maintance?0 -
She has no strangle hold on me. Her father(a well to do but frugal farmer)passed away several months back and she will be getting some money in addition to an annual gift she receives. She is all about the money. I on the other hand couldn't give a rats a$$ about it and consider whatever she gets hers (which really pi$$es her off). Her folks have helped us out with our house and a few other thinks so I pretty much consider that stuff hers. I could walk away tommorrow with my vehicle, boat, guns and other sporting equipment and be perfectly happy(I have simple needs). She is very frugal in some ways and has no problem pi$$ing away money in others. I see this as one of those instances.
It should be noted that her father has a small collection of muscle cars and her uncle a similar collection of vets and of which would be better than a Hummer.0 -
The owners wife where my wife works is the same way. She had to have a Hummer. Three years later they are still paying for it and having to have it in the shop at least every three months. She has ripped off both running boards one twice in parking lots and been in two fender benders becasue she can't drive it. She looks really cool in that dented box though. 0 -
You didn't say whether she wants the real Hummer, the Humm-Burban, or the HummS10.
Whatever floats your boat. Can she write a check for it? Or will she be buying a vehicle she can't afford, with money she doesn't have, to impress people at red lights she'll never meet and neighbors she doesn't like?
I think people ought to have what they want, if they can afford it and if they behave responsibly with it.0 -

Besides maintenance, fuel, maintenance, tires, maintenance- check the price of getting INSURANCE on one. (GASP) Then tell your wife that her dad probably would have liked one- a friend mentioned today that they look just like a tractor (you did say FIL was a farmer- right?) 0 -

If she can afford one, it's still not that great of an excuse to get one. I know somebody has to buy them. But, I don't know why people don't understand that most vehicles are probably about the worst possible investment you could ever make. It's all about how much money you're willing to waste on one. I think if people could sit down and look at how bad they're losing on paper, everyone would be much more educated. Financing thousands of dollars at high interest rates over 4-6 years on something that is depreciating so fast, pretty much causes you to lose money twice as fast! Not only is the vehicle too expensive to begin with, but the banks need to make a fortune on you too! And the next guy or dealer will give you a long laundry list when you go to sell it on why it's junk. I've always liked having nice vehicles but now I'm finally 6 months away from not having a huge car payment for the first time in the last 7 years. I have a very nice looking, roughly 6,000 dollar car to show for it, if I'm lucky. Pretty sad.
I guess I kind of quit caring what people drove back in highschool. Trying to compete with the Jones' is an impossible task which will leave you broke and unable to ever retire. Go on a vacation and invest the rest. Why get an obscenely expensive vehicle that will probably cause you more headaches than a used car? There are very few mechanical or electronic things I've been happy with past the 2-3 year mark. Very few. Sure vehicles are temporarty, but why lose her butt in 3 years when it's trade in time? It's a tough call, man. Once the newness wears off, it could be very dissapointing.
Hummers are extremely heavy, which is why they can be sluggish on the highway. Meaning it's probably going to be tougher on just about every mechanical part. The windshield is so narrow and straight up and down that at times, it can be hard to see traffic lights. Those are just a couple of things I've read on them.0 -
Break the antenna off a Hummer and whip her a$$!
That ought to cure her desire for a Hummer...0
