Maybe the Best Day of My Career
I have the morning show on a local radio station in my hometown. Today Pastor John Roberts of First Baptist Church-the chaplain of the Logan County Military Support Group-asked if he could use a couple of minutes of air time to plead for money to send care packages to the 22 men and women stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Well, sure, John. I had a few spare minutes between silly jokes and Anna Nicole updates...Come on in.
We talked for about ten minutes about what the Group does and what they needed most: postage. It was gonna cost about $1100.00 to get the stuff to our troops.
I figured to raise a hundred bucks or so, but more importantly, keep the listeners abreast of what the Group is doing.
Lemme tell ya, boss. That was the most incredible two and a half hours of air time I've ever experienced. That's right, so many people called or stopped by the studios to write checks that we just canned the rest of the show and went with this topic. Not many checks were under $50.00. One grizzled, bearded 'Nam vet stopped in, broke out his checkbook and wiped tears from his eyes as he made out a check. All he would say is, "Wish somebody had done this for us. God bless". In all we hauled in $1325.00. Enough not only for the Easter care packages, but a little seed money for the July 4th push.
I've never been so proud to be from here in my whole life. It was a humbling and overwhelmingly beautiful day. Just had to share.

Yep, the compassion of humanity can be a wonderful thing to behold.
I am a member of the 40&8 which is the "fun and honor society" of the American Legion. The biggest program we do locally is the nurses training scholarships (there are other 40&8 programs, too). When we have a fish fry the Legion hall is always packed, which evokes a similar pride for me.0 -

That's a slam-dunk, lead-pipe cinch. Only next time, we're gonna have some prior planning. By the way, the official tally came in this morning. Just over $1,700.00.
