Potential FNG**** UPDATE
Friend of a Friend comes in today for a job, says he has a GED. Through the grapevine, I find out he's a dropout. Hellava nice guy, 20 years old, 3 month old baby and needs a job. He lied on the application after I vouched for him. My work WILL want to see his GED. If you where in his position, or mine (need help really bad) what would you do? I realize hes lied right off the bat, but I would tou in his position. Comments?[?]
He called in today and said hes having a problem getting his GED results,Itll be a few days.Could we hire him on a probationary period untill the results come in.He was asked where did he get it from,He gave a web site that charges 219.00 to get one. They confirmed that he took there required tests,However they couldnt release his results. My inside guy on the other end tells me he is taking some type of classes at night.(maybe a real ged course)Looks like hes coming aboard. The balls in his court now.

You already did. Don 0 -
Dont vouche for a friend of a friend. Havent you ever seen a gangster movie 0 -
Ask him to see his GED. If he doesn't tell him to call a college and get it fast. The tests are painfully easy. I had to get my GED. 0 -
Online diploma farm, they printem, you pay for em. 0 -
If your workplace is gonna ask to see the GED, his ship has already sailed sunk. 0 -
Quickly do a search for a high school that has burned to the ground in the last 2 years and tell the employer that was his school and all records are lost. 0 -
I would ask him directly if he has a GED. If he doesn't, then tell him to call the hiring manager and let them know that he made a mistake on his application. He meant to write that he will be getting a GED in "Insert Month Here" and then get his azz down to take the GED test.
I would definately not lie for him. If he says he does have a GED ask to see it. If he can't produce it and he won't do the above, then inform him that you will have to inform your employer about it because your integrity is on the line.
DO NOT LIE FOR HIM!0 -
Have any of you gus been given a 2nd chance when you probly didnt deserve it?I have,I wont lie for the boy,But I dont feel inclined to tell my peers what I know. 0 -
Don't be self righteous. Don't lie for him, but don't volunteer the info. Tell he needs to make it right or you will. He is unfairly trading on your good name.

...Are you the boss that will be hiring the guy, if not, let them (Co.) worry about him.
...When I had my Co. and I hired people, I told them during the interview that if they were hired, there were three things I would fire them for, NO 2nd chance.
1) Unless you die or there is a death in the immediate family, don't be late or miss ONE day of work the first two weeks of being hired.
(THEY came to ME looking for a job)
2) Get caught lieing EVER.
(you lie to a supervisor, customer, client, I DON'T need the problem(s).
3) Steal from ANYONE associated with my Co.
(hate thieves)

I would seek counsel from a much older and wiser person. I would hang on to him if he is a good worker. He may be embarresed that he dropped out of school, which shows he's gaining wisdom. I would not want to be in your shoes. Good luck! 0 -

Your azz is on the line, too.0 -
Don't lie for him - it will bite you in the butt later.
But, he is trying to be a stand up guy by providing for his kid - which is more than a lot of guys would do. So he deserves to be stood up for to a point.
Go with HandgunHTR52's suggestion - the kid made a mistake and meant to say he's going to get his GED.0 -

Phillip. Ask him. Having a GED means that you have dropped out of high school. The "grapevine" may know that he quit school but not be aware that he took the GED test. I mean what are they saying? That he dropped out of the GED program? Also tell him that your employer will need to see it and he'd better get on with taking it if he wants the job. It's a fairly simple multiple choice test. Some places want you to take their prep classes but the test is so simple that most anyone that made it through the public school system till they were old enough to quit could pass it with out them.
If he tells you he's too broke or too scared to take it. Tell him you'll take him down and pay for it and then DARE him to take it!
I did this for a neighbor once and he paid me back with his first paycheck!(it was only $5) Then framed the thing and it's probably still hanging on his living room wall!
And don't ever recommend anyone for a job again! Most times they will let you down and then blame you for their getting fired!
Krinkovman. Anyone that could operate a computer and read the print on that site could breeze through a General Education Development test! [8D]

Are you 100% sure that he does not have a GED?
Many High School Dropouts do have GED's!
Myself included!0 -
I have ten years in management, rules are you must have at least GED. I have put people on the job that promised to upgrade their education, all were happy to get a break, and all but a few turned to be good productive members of this company.
Having been given several breaks in my life, lucky? maybe, but I believe you make your own luck.
I am also proud of the people that have served me and this company and glad to have been given a break along the way.
Go out on a limb, if their worth their salt, things will work out.Rules are to be streached from time to time.0 -
