waht do you do when someone gets in your face?
what do you do when someone gets in your face?
if you tell them to get out of your face and they don't, can you physically remove them from your face?
if they just stand there in your face and won't go away, is that some kind of assault they can get charged for? and what good is it if it's your word against theirs?
if you push them away, and then you get in a fight, is it (whiny granny voice) all your fault? or isn't it their fault for starting something in the first place?
The Wisdom Of The Ancients says, basically, clock the f8**ker. anytime after that, in an ensuing fight, when he makes a move towards you, you usually have the advantage in applying some Ancient Ass Kicking Technique. but when you both get hauled into court afterwards the judge usually doesn't agree with that.
plus, I'm frustrated because it's always been my experience that it's all my fault. that's right. somebody walks down the street and insults me, if I clobber him, I get in trouble. on the other hand, if I walk down the street and insult somebody and they clobber me, it's all my fault. so, I need to know what "the right thing to do" is if/when somebody gets in my face to keep it from being "all your fault".
another thing is, what do you do when you're about to get in a fight, and the dude is holding a pen? you know he's going to use it as a (potentially deadly) weapon. but in the bloody aftermath (yours or his), you know he's going to say "pen? what pen? that ain't my pen" or "so I was holding a pen, so what" or the pen simply disappears. what do you do when that scenario is about to happen?
yes, I have had all of the above happen to me. not lately. I've always wondered about it.

LOL Same here. Usually just eye contact alone is enough for most
all people to know that getting in my face would be a very bad mistake.
Only once did I have someone literally in my face. It was when I
worked in the trucking industry, and drivers from the shop fought
and made up on a regular basis. One drive was nose to nose with me
screaming, and wanted to know if I "wanted to get down and roll around
on the floor for awhile". I calmly told him that "I don't play those
games, and if we go down - only one will be getting up". He decided
to walk away.
I don't start fights, and definately will not be easy on any who
insist on one. I take it very seriously, and will do what's
neccesary to remove the threat..forever. As said, most can tell this
with eye contact alone, so it's rarely an issue.0 -
never had that problem, so dont know what to tell you....guess people can read me and that if they want to start something pry best not with me i guess. 0 -
I really dont have problems like that. I tend to live a peaceful life. 0 -

I do the same thing, I tell them to grow up because they're making themself look like a fool.
I had one guy who eats a clove of raw garlic a day get in my face one time at work. He was way out of line, he called me a punk, and I told him to watch it, he doesn't need to resort to name calling. He got in my face and said, "Why, you gonna knock me out big boy?". I said, "Not here, but your breath is about to knock me out."
Then he stormed off.0 -
TR Fox gave some excellent advice. By turning your body at 90 degrees, you have gained some space. If they want to get back in your face again, they will either have to walk around (they will get tired of that) or grab you to turn you- and the rules just changed. By turning, you also are now edge-on to an assualt- where his groin, kneecaps, solar plexus and throat are exposed. You have also shown to any potential witnesses that you attempted to retreat. IF you are going to get into unarmed combat, having him "in your face" is an excellent place to start. Get inside his clothes with him. It is hard to strike with any real force when your opponent is at at range of 1/2 inch! On the other hand, remember what my Dad taught me- "Hit the soft parts with your hand. Hit the hard parts with a utensil!" And as Mlincoln said- why are they in your face? PS several states also criminally prohibit "fighting words" as being calculated to bring about a breach of the peace. 0 -
Stand sideways, back up if you have to.
If they don't stop and escalate the action, make a fist on your right had and open your index and second fingers, making a "V". Take that "V" and grab their nose -- pull forward them forward and twist their nose. Their hands will go up to try and get you to release them. That leaves their body open to a blow -- While they're off balance, stand on their foot and hold it down. In a very quiet voice say "if you don't get out of my face, I'm going to really hurt you". If they threaten or try to hit you, put 'em down.0 -
Or you could grab their ear and tell them they've been a naughtly little boy. Then send them to timeout. 0 -
Sneeze, then cough up a honker. 0 -

On the other hand, if you have, indeed, been judged the guilty-party, or if these type situations continue to happen in your life, then you might want to adjust your habits so as to have a more peaceful existence.
Some people lead sheltered lives, and I'm not knocking that, or the way they conduct themselves, while others go to where rough men dwell. A piece of advice given to me by one of my uncles when I told him I was off to join the Marines, was for me to "Remember who you are, and stand up if you're ever called out". Once people get to know you and your values, they tend to respect and accept you. I passed that same piece of advice on to my son, too, since it paid good dividends for me. Good luck to you.
sounds like you're saying 'don't take no crap' and once people get to know you and your values, they tend to respect and accept you. I've found that that's true to some extent: good folks respect you, and regarding the punks, they won't F with you if they don't think they'll get away with it.
but the problem is that unless you live under a rock, you will meet all kinds of ppl in this world, and surprisingly often a punk pops out of nowhere when you're least expecting it... and they don't know me from adam. my problem is that I don't like to take crap. hence, this topic.
other stuff I'm reading here is just out of touch with reality. you can't just fart, blame it on the other guy, laugh and walk off. or tell them about your garlic breath. it's not funny. either get punked out by a punk, or go and put them down. that's when they get in your face. and that's what I'm talking about.
regarding a 'more peaceful existence', I have a college degree for chrissakes. I thought I would get a real job, work with un-punkish people, live life like an adult and be able to put all this crap behind me. but that ain't how things turned out. I think I actually had more troubles since then. and this stuff doesn't happen all that often, but it still happens, and often enough to where I know it's going to happen again someday. I don't think it's ever going to stop.
you know? you drive in traffic. you go to various stores. you go to the movies. you do this and that. and you run across morons that give you crap. you can either turn the other cheek, or call them on it. and that's when it happens.0 -
The whole "getting in your face" thing is totally lost on me. Whats the point? When I was back in high school I'd just hit them hard and fast. Now I just tell them to either do something or get the hell away from me their being annoying.
I have only had a few people get in my face since I've gotten out of high school. You'd think people would grow up at some point.0 -

Agreed. They guy from the story earlier was 55 at the time. He'll never grow up.0 -
buschmaster, you're right, there are dudes in this world. But if you go through life with a chip on your shoulder, you're going to find a lot of people who will knock it off.
I have a buddy who reminds me of you. He gets in about four fights / physical altercations a year, has been arrested twice. He'll tell me about how he was at a bar and there was some guy who was going on and on about how great his team is and how some other team sucks, and he'll get sick and tired of it and "have to" tell the guy to knock it of. Well, there it goes. Or he'll be out driving and somebody in front of him will pass on a double line, and he'll become incensed and get out of his car at the next light and tell the guy he's a menace and this and that. One time he was at a bar and said some guys were starring at his girlfriend, and when he went to the bathroom one of the guys started talking to her. She tells him about it and he goes over and starts a fight with the guy.
Yeah, in all of these situations he'll tell me about he was forced into a fight. He was dissrespected and had to do something. Fine and dandy, I tell him, but I'm not getting up in the middle of the night anymore to pick him up at the police station.0 -
you may be right. this sucks. 0 -

Busch: You sound like a very intelligent and reasonable person. I would also think you have a great deal of common sense, too. Sometimes you have to bide your time with an opponent, set him or them up, so to speak, to even out the odds some. Sometimes you have to simply stand your ground and maintain as much dignity in the process as possible. And, sometimes you simply have to back off. There is no loss of face if a person, or persons, have weapons like bottles, knives, razors, or guns pointed at you, or if they are nthe ones making an ass out of themselves. Use your common sense, as I think you probably do, as often as necessary to protect yourself and/or others.
I don't ever recall an incident where I have ever been in a fight, be it one on one, or in a big brawl at a club somewhere, that the GOOD guy(s) got the short end of the stick...where justice was concerned.0 -
it depends
if i am at the stage, i usually tip a few bucks, but if i am not since it was not invited i usually do not tip unless she is really hot0 -
Get thicker skin and learn the wisdom needed to not place yourself in a situation where some one gets in your face. 0 -
I must disagree with you at least on a moral stage. While legally we may not have the right to remove someone from our face, moraly we do. It is the thinking that we do not, and letting those who are overly aggressive have their way of things that has made a major contribution to our F'ed up society today. I do agree however about the mustang at the stop light part of your post.quote:Originally posted by mlincoln
A very interesting question! I spent two years as an anger management counselor. Yep, people came to us for anger and domestic abuse issues, and about 90% of the people in the classes were court ordered.
All sorts of interesting situations had landed them there, and there was almost always a big difference between why they said they were there and why the court said they were there.
But to get to the question, if someone gets "in your face" you don't have a right to hit them. Sorry, but you don't. If you're driving a Mustang and somebody at a stoplight says a Mustang is a POS, you don't have a right to hit them. Sorry, but you don't. If someone is rude to you in a bar or cuts in front of you in line, you don't have a right to hit them. You can CHOOSE to hit them, but it's your CHOICE and you'll have to live with the consequences of it.
And you know what's funny, VERY, VERY rarely over the two years I did the program did I have some regular joe who truly got pushed into a corner and popped somebody. In fact, I can think of two over the two years. Sure, everybody's story was that they were just minding their own business and something happened to them, but then you read the file and find out that in fact they've been arrested a couple times before, and that they've got a drinking problem, and that they got fired from work for cursing at a customer, and on the night of this latest offense they were drunk and arguing with the wife, and on and on. I had one guy sit there and tell me for 18 weeks how he was totally innocent, how this was all a big misunderstanding, and how his 2 year old broke her legs totally by accident and that all the previous hospital visits were from falling down the stairs and bumping into coffee tables and so forth. That guy sure didn't pass the course.
So, you can always choose to hit that rude, annoying jerk or the guy who cut you off in traffic or the clerk who crushed your potato chips when bagging your groceries. Just don't be surprised when the police show up and the judge doesn't accept crushed potato chips as a valid defense for assault and battery.0 -
anytime you have a dispute with someone and you are thinking about letting it get physical, just ask yourself, is this worth dying over ? 0 -

It rarely comes to the "dying" part. And if you continue to think like that every time, even when it is not warranted, then you will always be beaten before you start.0 -
It sounds like in your post your basically saying if you don't go looking for trouble, most of the time, you will not find trouble, that I'll agree with. Many times we tend to think that we truly are not looking for trouble, but in fact we are.quote:Originally posted by mlincoln

If that ever happens again, remember that hitting someone's head with your fist is USUALLY like hitting a bowling ball with your fist. Always use fists for soft body parts and the heel of your hands, or your forearms, for the harder body parts. Either that or use a "tool" designed for the job. Your fists are far to delicate and totally unsuited (despite common belief) for hitting hard objects.

+10 on this. That was one of the first things I was taught as a beginning student. A palm-heel strike is much more effective (and less painful) on the head, but tr fox is right, soft targets are MUCH better.0 -
I don't have this problem since my face was blown off in the war... 0
