Cop Tries to Shoot Snake, Kills Five-Year-Old Instead

Noble, OK (KWTV) - A police officer's stray bullet accidentally killed a five-year-old Oklahoma boy Friday night.

The boy was fishing in a pond behind a house in Noble, Oklahoma. Police received a call about a snake in the subdivision. When the officers responded they decided to shoot the snake.

Nobel City Manager Bob Wade said that officers heard a commotion in a highly-wooded area behind where they fired. Apparently, the young boy was shot by a stray bullet. The boy was transported to an Oklahoma City hospital where he was pronounced dead.

    Know your target and what is beyond.
    Be absolutely sure you have identified your target beyond any doubt. Equally important, be aware of the area beyond your target. This means observing your prospective area of fire before you shoot. Never fire in a direction in which there are people or any other potential for mishap. Think first. Shoot second.

    The snake should be charged with the death, if it had come down out of the tree when first confronted shots wouldn't have been fired.
