Olympic AR Questions
I picked this thing up fairly cheap the other day, figuring to make it a project.
It is an Olympic lower, flat-top upper receiver, VERY heavy fluted stainless steel barrel, and a tubular handguard. It is fitted with a huge BSA scope that runs up to 24X.
I was figuring on removing the barrel, forend, scope, and mount, and selling them separately. Then, I had planned to fit a normal barrel and handguard, folding iron sights, and some sort of optical reflex sight on the flat-top.
Before I do any of this, I will shoot it and see how it groups. Maybe keep it as is for a coyote rifle?
Your thoughts?
Better to replace the upper as a unit, or keep the upper and install a barrel?

Keep it the way it is and put a Harris bipod on it. It would make a great and accurate varmit rifle. Oh, get a different scope. 0 -

It's easier to just swap out uppers. It may save you money too. How long is the barrel and how much did the rifle run you? 0 -
keep the upper for coyotes and plinking.
Buy another complete upper for other use.0 -
If it's a 20" stainless bull bbl it might be an Oly K8 - - I had one, VERY accurate, but VERY heavy. Look for markings on the top of the bbl in front of the gas block.
Oly also makes a 16" bull bbl called a K16 - - I really want one - - but I don't remember a "fluted bbl" version.
Got any pics . . . It might be a custom job done by Dtech - - which means it should be a fantastic varmit/coyote rifle.0 -
I agree with john in jax in that an AR gets very heavy with the long bull barels and I would not want one for serious coyote/varmint hunting.
I like lighter simpler for coyote/varmints.
Now where these rifles really shine in the field is on a Pdog town where you are not moving as much but staying put and putting several rounds down range from one spot, at ranges of 100' to 500' and need the pin point accuracy.
If you do want to sell the upper I would just take the scope off and sell it seperatly and than sell the barreled upper as a unit.
If I kept anything it would only be the bolt carrier and bolt for my new upper.0 -
nunn shoot that puppy. My favorite is 20" bull with a little better scope but shoots a 1.5" ragged 20 shot hole at 300 yds. Just say dog gone when you touch the trigger. 0 -
If you decide to sell it and you have the tools I would pull the bbl. You should be able to sell the handguard and bbl for more then you would get the replacements for. Sure swapping uppers may be easier but sometimes it is fun to do yourself if you can. Also right now your receivers match in color. If you get a different brand they may be off slightly. 0 -
If the forend has a sling swivel stud it will be very hard if not impossible to remove it and and then get the handguard to line up again with the swivel on the bottom when it is put back on. It will be a nice gun from the bench if it shoots well but won't be much fun for packing anywhere. 0
