poison ivy cures
Got a good dose of poison ivy fishing last sat,mostly on my hands and arms.Any sure fire ways of curing this mess in a hurry? Ive tried all the smear on drugstore stuff, just took an oatmeal bath,that seemed to calm down the itching. I need help in a hurry,have two bar-b-ques and a salute to fallen heros at my ranch over the weekend.

benadryl is about all you can do, there is no "cure", once you have it in your system it must run it's course

That don't look like poison Ivy to me, but it very well could be.
I usually get a shot that dries it up over night in most cases.
I think it is called, "Kenallog" or something like that.
I'll asked my wife, she can tell me what it is. I think it is some kind of steroid or something but is safe and legal.

...Calimine lotion is all Ive really ever heard of for it. I'm fortuanate, not allergic to any of the poison ivy, oak, etc...Luck guy! I KNOW it has to itch you like crazy!

I'm a strong proponent of antihistamine and calamine lotion. 0 -
domboro's solution (sp), make a paste with it and apply several times daily, it will form a dry coating that pulls out the mositure from that area and effectively killing it where it started.
+1 on bleach water. I used straight bleach one time[:0][:0][B)] but it worked well also.0 -
None of that works on me... I have to go see the Dr. every time.... he writes out the script for steroids.. take them and the stuff dries up. 0 -
My Mom can catch that stuff by just standing down wind from it. Unfortunatly, I think you have to let it run its course. don't scratch it, because you will spread it, but I'm sure you already know this. One thing I do know, is if you find that you have been exposed to it, immiediately go take a bath with vinegar in your water. The vinegar kills the enzymes of the poison ivy. Hope this helps. 0 -
A shot of corticosteroids will do the trick. If you are into home remedies, the sap from a stalk of milk weed works well , or the juice from the leave stems of a touch-me-not plant will also show results. 0 -

Straight bleach burned and scarred me. The Dr winced at the scars.
I put Technu and anti itch cream on it at first itch before it spreads, then cover the area(s) with medical tape so it doesn't transfer to a towel or bedding or clothes where it can spread all over you.

There are two products that I have found to work, Zanthyl about 40 bucks and Tec-nu about 15 bucks. I keep Tec-nu on hand alwsys. They both work the same way and work great. Once you have a rash it will begin to blister. These blisters contain the poison oil. Apply the Tec-nu to a wash cloth and scrub the blisters aggressively until they burst. (I know this defies all logic and everything you have been told about poison ivy!) Once they burst reapply more Tec-nu to a clean part of the rag and scrub for 30 seconds. Rinse off under cool water and pat dry. At this point you apply the calamine lotion supplied with the Tec-nu. One to two applications will clear up damn near everything in two days. THROUGH THE WASH RAG AWAY!!! 0 -
Thanks guys, I appreciate the help, been putting Buds on it for three days,might just have to see the saw bones, I just hate to give in.
A few of you mentioned that the liquid that seeps from sores can spread the rash? Every written word that I have found is contrary to that belief. It sure looks like it spreads from blister to blister.

That looks more like you got into some blister agent, maybe mustard gas rather than poison ivy.
My mother and sister both are highly alergic, just look at it from 10' and they have it, never seen a case that bad before.
I'd take a trip to the doctor with something like that.0 -

As one who has had poison ivy many times and some very severe cases of it.
Go to rite aid, eckerds or whatever drug store and get DOMBORO astringent solution, mix one packet with about two or three tablespoons of water and mix into a paste. Apply the pase with tissues and allow to dry. In the morning, it will be gone. In some of my severe outbreaks, I had to re-apply a few times.
In the future, When returning home after fishing, if you think you might have been exposed to poison ivy, take a shower with DAWN dishwashing liquid. Sounds funny but it will take all the oils right off your skin.0 -

scratch the heck out of it
and smear straight bleach
all over the area,seems to go
away right quick.0
