Bullets, shells or cartridges...which one
Bullets, shells or cartridges...Which term was used in your are when you grew up? Here in NE ND most people used the term shells for shotgun and brass cartridges.
I always chuckle when I see an auction for "bullet heads". Guess I know what term they use.

Here on the Eastern Shore I always used Bullets for rifle/pistol and shells for shotgun 0 -
Growing up on the East coast it was shells for shotgun and bullets for rifle/pistol. Now after reloading and getting into shooting I refer to them as bullets, cases, cartridges or if I'm in a lazy mood I just say ammo. 0 -
Yeah, generally shells or ammo. Calling loaded rounds "bullets" is like calling the tires on your car "wheels", it's the wrong term and just plain dumb. Cartridges on the other hand, while being proper, is a little to up town for me, and besides it takes too long to say "cartridges" 0 -
Always used to call them bullets for rifle carts and shells for shotgun. After starting to reload, I refer to them all as shells. I dont like the word "cartridge". Just too long. 0 -

I call the projectile a "bullet".
I call fully-assembled center-or-rimfire ammunition that fire bullets "cartridges" or "rounds".
I call shotgun ammunition "shells"
I call the shell casings "brass", but only because I don't re-load for shotgun.0 -
Shells are for the shot guns. Rounds or ammo for everything else. Except muzzle loader of course, thems balls or bullets. [:D] 0 -
as long as i can remember . . when we are talking about cener or rimfire, the hole package is a "round" guess thats cause the military calles em rounds. shotguns are loaded with shells andfire shot
the result of a days shootng is a pile of Brass . . .again i guess influenced by the military
and i agree with the fella before. bullets are what exits the muzle (hopefully) and kill bad guys, miss dear and punch holes in anything else
cartridges as far as i am concerned are what i put in my printer when the darned thing runs out of ink.0 -

If the ammunition is loaded into the butt of the weapon, I call it a magazine. Loaded from the top, via strippers or an en bloc, I call it a clip. 0 -

A clip is used to charge a magazine, like a 1903 or Garand. A magazine is what actually holds the rounds. Internally like my previous examples of the 1903 or Garand, or externally and removable like the M-14/M-1A.0 -
I was just curious if the different terms were used on a regional bases or just kind of a random thing. In many of the western movies they seem to be refered to as cartridges but we all know the accuracy of movies. IF... that was correct terminology at the time it makes you wonder how the other terms became popular.
Thinking back I also can recall the use of the term "bullet cases" in reference to empty brass.
"Clips" was the predominant term by the previous generation in my area but "magazine" is starting to dominate, especially for handguns.
I have heard the term bullets used for shotgun shells on rare occassions but generally by newbees.0 -
When I grew up (well, that is what was supposed to be happening ... some would question wheter I've actually grown up yet!) in Illinois, we said shells for shotgun ammo and cartridges for rifle ammo ... except for .22s which we called "twenty-two's" or "twenty-two ammo". Not sure why, but it just did not seem right to call a twenty-two ammo a "cartridge."
Yup, bullets are what comes out of the end of a rifle barrel, (and make that shot or slugs out of a shotgun).
Now, you ask what comes out of a muzzle loader?
Smoke! Oh, yes, there is usually a round ball or a conical bullet or a sabot, too. Not always, though![V][V][:(][:(][;)][;)][:(!][:(!]0 -
Down south in Florida most shooters use shells for shotguns, bullet if singular, rounds if plural. Gunshops call it ammo.
Now, in the hood they call'em caps.
Used in a sentence:
"Ima gonna bust a cap in your a$$!"[:D]0 -

I call them by their cartridge designation.
If I am going to shoot my AR15 I say " I need to grab some 223"
If I am going to shoot my Hunting rifle I say " I need to get some 7MM"
When I go duck hunting I say " I need to stop and get some T shot"
or "#4s"

Mostly I load cylinders, but sometimes I load magazines. Nothing I own takes clips. 0 -
As a kid, everything was shells and clips.
As a grown up, it's mostly cartridges. Mags for most and clips for Garands.

I went dove hunting one time with a friend of mine. when we go out for dove, we go get it. we blasted through boxes and boxes of #4. I got 2 shotguns, he had 3 shotguns to choose from, we go to his cousin's place and they got racks of guns. everybody's wearing camo. shotguns this. rifles that. deer hunting this. pheasant hunting that. all weekend.
so I'm going home after all that, with 2 shotguns in the back of the truck, prolly 8 boxes of shells left over.
I'm driving thru town to get back home. mr. O.G. driving next to me in the pimp-o-ride looks over, sees the honky in camo and a baseball cap, gives me quite the sneer. he thinks he's bad.
feh. whatever he's got, it would have been laughed at where I just came from. if he woulda pulled out his, and I pulled out mine (I'd choose the 870 with 7-shot mag extension), he'd a crapped his pants. what a joke.0 -
