new RIA 1911 - weird jam

Took my new RIA 1911 out this weekend and put 200 rounds thru it - 100 rounds WWB ball and 200 rounds Rem.-UMC ball.

Had a couple of weird jams tho, and I'm not sure if it is a 1911 thing or just plain weird. 5 or 6 times, the slide would get locked back while the mag still had a few rounds in it. Wasn't a stovepipe, or caught on the feed ramp, since hitting the slide release would allow the slide to go forward, feed the round, and into full battery. Didnt' seem mag related - happened with both teh Novak mag that came with the gun and with a 10 round Chip McCormick my xfer dealer gave me, and happened with anywhere from 1 to 3 rounds left in the mags, and all happend in the last 50 rounds of the day.

I've not seen this on any of the other semi autos I've shot (Ruger MKII, various 9mms - CZ, Glock, Browning HP), so I don't know if this is just an unusal jam or a 1911 thing or what.

Suggestions?

    SuburbanNoize - don't let my post scare you off. I compared my Rock Island to a Springfield my xfer dealer had in stock and they are equal in fit/finish/etc. Quite a few folks both on this forum and elsewhere have good experiences with them - I'm sure my issue is just new gun related.

    check out the slide hold open lever, make sure not catching on something
    try heavier recoil spring if it continues

    iwannausername, thanks, git-r-done i think swears by his RIA's, to me i cant find a better value in a 1911 than the RIA. and im getting the .38 because ive never shot a .45 and i think for what i want to do with it .38 is just fine for me. If any one whos on the forums has one for sale i would gladly throw my business there way, but i dont think any member on here have on for sale. -Dave

    Also, it could be your thumb placement. Your thumb could be activating the slide stop with the recoil of the firearm, especially if you have a slide stop with a extension on it.

    My springfield micro compact did this the first couple hundred rounds. I think it may have been more a shooter thing than a gun failure. That small of a 45 is somewhat hard to hang onto. I think my thumb was ridiing high and catching the mag catch just enough to hold open the slide. Now that I that I have shot the gun for a while, I have no issues.

    I think drobs is onto the problem. I got simular deals when I porposly limp wristed one of mine to see what it would do.

    Pretty sure it isnt my hand placement - small hands, have to adjust grip to reach mag release or slide release. Don't think I was limp wristing either, as it wasn't happening with some early one hand shooting I was doing. Although that could be it, I'll pay more attention next time I'm at the range.

    Having to adjust your hand to reach the slide lock and mag release is normal for right handers. Us lefties use our index fingers.

    Notice how I call it a slide lock. In order to release the slide to chamber a round from slide lock you want to get in the habit of pulling it to the rear with your off hand and letting it fly forward on it's own force. That way the recoil sring uses it full force and gets it's full travel. If you don't do this the spring can hang up.

    Releasing the slide by pushing the catch down with your thumb can also cause the rear corner of the notch in the slide to wear off.
