California Regis out of state guns
I live in Northern California. I was recently going to buy a gun from gunbrokers and it was for sale from out of state. Since I haven't bought any guns from out of state, I went to my local gun dealer to see how everything works. Well, my local gun dealer FFL said that first he gets the sellers FFL number and then he sends his FFL number to the Seller. Is this right?? Then, he said that he would charge $100.00 for an out of state transfer plus $35.00 for the paperwork. This sounds funny to me. Is this legal? Can the FFL just charge whatever he wants just because the guns are for sale outside of California? I would appreciate any information concerning buying and registering guns from out of state sales. He can charge whatever he wants (and whatever you will pay). It seems excessive to me. I pay $20 or less per item I have shipped to my dealer. The "less" is for when I buy other stuff while I'm there. 0 -
Thats basically it....
Remember - each gun you buy - even at a good price - online, etc. is a gun that they didn't sell themselves. My local dealer has no problems doing transfers, after all its an easy $25 for him, and its really hard to leave a gunshop with a new gun and no ammo, extra mags, cleaning kit parts, etc. that you may need to go with it... several other local dealers are very predatory in teh transfer pricing, I guess to make buying elsewhere and having them do the paperwork less attractive than ordering direct from them. Which I also understand, at least on new items, but for used items...
As to the actual $135, I think part of this is him wanting a profit as if he had sold a gun, and part of it is the fees that are charged in California. Here in Fl, a phone call background check takes about 2 minutes and costs the dealer 5 dollars... what are the fees out there in Cali?0 -
Do a transfer dealer search on Gun Broker. You should find someone for 1/3 of that. 0 -

The thing about California that you HAVE to think about when dealing with a transfer from out of state.....
He doesn't have the business that the other states may have. Charging the EXTREME fees that he does keeps it a competitive market for the area. I can't see a California based business lasting long unless they can somehow benefit from these types of transfers. The fact that there is a gun store left in the entire state is just amazing.....pay that man his $100 and tell him THANK YOU for not giving up. I'd kiss his cheek if I were there...but I'm a girl and I doubt you want to go that far.0 -
My FFL dealer charges $10 per gun, with a maximum of $20 per transaction. 0 -
[8D]---Very good reasoning Locust, except that of the 30 or more gunshops within 30 minutes of me, the prices range from $50 to 100 bucks for transfer and there are a LOT of GUNS available. Our BATFE in California is VERY picky and choosey-so all the paper work HAS to be EXACT along with the background checks--

I'm not in that area....so I don't know just how it is...but it has to be hard to keep the doors open when you have less "gun buyers." The summer is bad here....but I still have about 10 to 20 sales a day. There isn't much mark up on some guns. The hunting rifles are coming in and going out with only a $20 profit....everyone is going on vacation so not many people with extra money. Sunny weather is a KILLER for us....and its sunny every day over there. Rain means busy....certain guys can't work in the rain and we get more traffic on bad weather days. Cold days are awesome!!!! Cold makes people want to shoot all the fuzzy creatures. Its never cold over there either. I just don't know what I would do if I couldn't look foreward to the rainy, cold icky days! 0 -
[8D]-Yea Locust the weather is pretty good here, most of the gunshop traffic is in PISTOLS even with the "one per month" rule and the Remington/Browning rifle traffic can be fairly heavy.--
All the shops have a resident gunsmith so repairs are pretty easy (read expensive)--

I ve had certian dealers that tried to pull that $100 dollar crap on me before; and I ve told them straight up the its bullpies.
It should not cost more than $35.00 plus the cost of shipping(which you would pay in advance anyways).
They are trying to scam you and I would look elsewhere and tell them they are bs.
I seriously doubt that some wackoff CA DOJ law requires such outragous fees; so I would contact another FFL to do the stuff.0 -

Thats a rip off, Im in Northern/Sierra Mountain Area California.
Most of my gun buys are online & out of state. Local gunshop here charges $40 for transfers.Stay away from Herb Bauer, there a rip as well.I wouldnt kiss anyones cheek for being a greedy thief.0 -
You didn't say what kind of gun. Remember that handguns must be either on the "approved list" from the state DoJ or be C&R eligible to be legal for importation and sale within CA. Rifles and shotguns are fine except for those nasty "assault weapons" (a long list) or any magazines over 10 rounds.
CA is famous for very high transfer fees and unreasonable dealers. But $135 takes the cake.0 -
Local gent down here in Laguna Niguel charges 10% of purchase price.
No other fees and seems to do a tidy business.Consignments,transfers,and about a 150 gun inventory.0 -
Ask your favorite CA gun dealers how much their business license and special state firearms license is....in the state of CA.
Then, you will understand the $100 fee.0 -

Then please explain to me why one FFL charges $40, and another charges $135? Doesn't make much sense to buy a $80 Mosin, then have to pay a $100 transfer does it?
I understand he has to cover his license fee, but I don't want to be the one paying for it with one transfer.0 -
I live in So Cal. That is a rip-off. The guy can charge what he wants but you don't have to buy.Shop around.
