Plumbing Question: Metal or PVC?
I'm going to be doing some plumbing work on my house shortly. The pipes are a mess and look as if they were thrown together by a 5 year old. Anyway, many are a combination of metal going to PVC going back to metal with rubber pieces and hose ties connecting them. The main sewage pipe (going from the toilet) is a large iron(?) one which has a nice bit of rust on it (I don't know if I will be able to replace this one on my own.. might leave it to a pro). Should I replace the metal (both steel and copper) pipes with PVC, or do the entire project with metal piping? Thanks in advance for your input.

If you want to do it the way i'm thinking of it, use pex for municiple water and PVC for sewage, it will be much easier...if you really want to do it right, call a professional, i've saw way toooo many people think they could just plumb up something, there's alot more to it than you can imagine0 -
As a rule of thumb, inside-the-house water supply lines should be copper. PVC is fine for exterior and landscape watering lines. Water pressure is the primary consideration as it can vary dramatically from day to day.
Sweated copper pipe (tubing) if done correctly is much stronger along a length and bends than PVC or even PEX. Also, rodents have been known to gnaw through plastic - and also lead - to get to water, but copper reacts with saliva and leaves a bad taste in their mouths.
There are two standards of copper pipe (tubing) in the home centers. One is for above ground and the other for below ground installations. Obviously, you'll want the above ground spec which is cheaper and slightly thinner.0 -

Metal pipes under all foundations and exposed to weather, cast iron for sewer, copper for water, what ever you wish elsewhere, but metal is the best in all applications, just expensive.
I have a sprinkler system that is all copper. My house was built in 1998 and I have never had any work done on it. My neighbors all have systems using PVC, and all of them do some kind of repair about every three years. Part of the reason is the soil is clay and expands and shrinks a lot!0 -

I have PEX in my place, the one down side is if mice chew on the stuff you will have nice pin holes everywhere. However you can cut the chewed sections out and put a swagelok fitting.
Had this experience about a year ago, took me two days of tearing out sub floors to get to the leaks.0 -
