Mountain biking does all that for me, as well as surfing, shooting, snowboarding and buttload of other activities that are way more fun (to me) than running. Again, I have a certain goal when I run, but I just can't see how it can be anything else but a specific goal. Maybe if I suffered from stress or anxiety I'd understand :)

Nothing against it, I am just curious. I mean, it does seem a little Forrest Gump-ish [:D]

Now, this type of goal I could also understand: link

Makes no sense to me. Hurts more than it helps any more. Long ago (high school)I ran on the Cross Country team but I had a perfectly logical reason, one of the female runners was HOT! Good news is I was very slow...hated to see her run past me every day in practice, but sure didn't mind watching her go.[8D]

I used to run 6 miles a day.

I loved every minute of every run.

I wish I could still run like I used to, a bad knee and shin splints have stuck me to doing other things to keep in shape. With the weather getting cold soon, I'll be in even more pain.

Runners run because they enjoy it.

I run because I have to do the 1.5 mile in under 12 minutes. I hate running. I destroyed my ankle three years ago in a motorcycle accident and now it's full of arthritis and aches damn near every day to the point of almost not being able to walk on it. I still run though, seems to be something I'm good at. Who ever thought a 5'9" 200 pound mechanic could run.

Can't see doing it....on purpose at any rate.

Dad always said, "Poor riding is better than good walking. And running? Nahhhh....)

I don't understand it either but my co-worker runs 6-8 miles during his lunch break. He does half marathons every month all over the US. He said, it's what keeps him going ... it must be working very well, at age 45 he's in pretty good shape.

For me, why run and die tired [}:)]!

I run because I stepped on a beehive. Other than that a saunter or lazy shuffle is just fine with me.

Running will help you loose weight and tone you up. I run a mile or so before I lift.

I would think it.Im only an inch taller than you,Same weight an I do it to.I have found that 3 miles on a treadmill is NOT the same as 3 miles outside.I havent been running lately but Im about to get back to doing it. My goal is 185/190.Winters coming ya know.

One brother ran the mile through high school and later for Georgetown on an athletic scholorship. He also raced bicycles and did a lot of speed skating.
At 65, he needs two hips and one knee replacement and an ankle to be frozen. Running beats up knees and hip joints
That little Olympic athlete Mary Lou Retton, now an adult,is
advertising knee replacement prostheses on TV.
There are less stressful exercises to the joints.

I used to run. The only thing it ever did for me is give me bad knees and a ruptured disc in my back.

Now I just walk. It is not as painful and my dog can go with me.[:D]

in high school and college, i was on both the track and cross country teams. not counting practice, i ran 10 miles every morning and 10 every evening. my running was, mostly, for training. I also used it as a kind of meditation. there was nothing like running, thinking about everything and nothing. i'd run out my problems and more often than not, would find a solution. it helped me concentrate in my early years in college. when it turned into an escape...feeling like i was running away from my problems instead of helping me solve them, that's whan i quit.

on the plus side though, i did meet ALOT of hotties...dated a couple of them...one girl ... oh wait...that story might be inappropriate for younger viewers... [:D]

I started running as a boy because i boxed and that was part of the training regimen.
Well i stopped boxing at age 21 but i never really gave up the running.
Now at age 54 i still do it.
Although the six minute miles of my 20's are long gone i can still do better than most of the 17-18 year olds at the high school track i run on because they are in such abysmal shape.
Today i run 3-4 days week at about nine minutes a mile for two miles.
It truely keeps you fit, your heart and lungs working, and your blood pressure lower.
It's not for everyone but i still enjoy it.

I think that is it. Staying healthy, in shape (not the round one too) and what not is a goal, but I know at least a dozen people that run for the heck of running, and this most likely explains it. Thanks [:D]

It is hard to explain. During my college days I ran 4-6 miles daily and participated in several 10K races and a couple half marathons.

I sorta gets under you skin and becomes and obsession for many.

Not for me. I can't eat while running. Besides, if you see someone running around here, it's probably because they stole something![8D]

When I'm on fire it's the best way to attract attention, as a sport it the best method to get out of the way of a thrown javelin.

I run because it is something I can do anywhere and anytime. I travel quite a bit for work and need something to keep me in shape on the road. The runners high is what keeps me going. It does become addicting. As others have said, it helps me clear my mind and relax. I'm sure I could get that by cycling, swimming, etc, but running is what I started doing when I was young, and it has stuck with me through the years. I now am training for marathons and hope to qualify for the Boston marathon in a couple of years. That's is what keeps me motivated.
