Gerber still supports Zumbo

Following Jim Zumbo's recent comments, those of us at Gerber would like to clarify that we respect the opinion of our sponsored hunters and users however, we do not necessarily agree with all their opinions, nor do we endorse their public statements. Our presence and development in the tactical and hunting markets is proof-positive we are committed to supporting these industries and all those involved.

Since Jim's blog was published he has issued this apology: http://outdoorlife.blogs.com/zumbo/2007/02/i_was_wrong_big.html.

Thanks for supporting our rights and for supporting Gerber Legendary Blades.

    Very true. Gerber is free to continue an affiliation with Jim Zumbo based on his right to express his own opinions. And I am free to say NOT GOOD ENOUGH and take my money elsewhere...Case knives look good and I can always replace my Gerber Tool with a Leatherman!!

    Plenty of good knife makers out there to support. Gerber doesn't understand that their support of Anti Opinions will be a losing battle.

    I sent Gerber an email (Sales@gerbergear.com) telling them I would not support their company anymore.

    It's a shame too because I like the Gerber multi-pliers much more than Leatherman.

    I got the same canned reply as well. I too sent them a follow up email stating I would not purchase their products anymore.

    we have to keep the pressure on to make our point clear and show we mean business.

    Interesting public reaction. I consider it well deserved for someone/something that breaks ranks with the gun faternity. I wonder why Smith and Wesson was welcomed back after they did the same with Clinton? I agree a new owner/apology just ain't good enough.

    There are a few people that feel Mr Zumbo has apologized and he should be forgiven. I look at it like this, His comments will not go away, he is a major player in the "Hunting" world. Sooner or later the political debates concerning "Assault Rifles" will surface again. And you can bet your ass that the anti gun crowd will have his comments "Front and Center". They will have the words of a "well respected" outdoor writer and hunter associating AR's and other semi-autos with "Terrorists". This may be just enough to sway some "middle of the roaders" over to the anti side.

    Due to your company's support af the anti-Constitutionalist jim zumbo, I will be liquidating my 50 year collection of gerber products.

    I will not be purchasing any more gerber products, and I will be notifying everyone I know, including internet chat rooms/bulletin boards, of my decision.

    I hope you re-evaluate your position. Please notify me if you do.

    This is a shame, since I live in Oregon and like to support Oregon based companies. My attention will now be focussed upon Columbia River Knife and Tool, and Kershaw products.

    Ownership and control changed hands since then. Although, I won't buy a gun with one of those stupid integral trigger locks which means that I'll only buy used Smiths. The only pistol of theirs that interests me is the 457S which I hope to purchase in the next year.

    They just received this email from me, my second in as many days:

    Once again I write to urge you to drop your affiliation with/sponsorship of Jim Zumbo. Having purchased Gerber products in the past--I am the satisfied owner of several of your products--I can assure you that as long as you support him and his reckless statements about "terrorist rifles," I will seek other companies to supply my knife/ax/multi-tool needs.

    I KNOW there are thousands of others who share my sentiments. Please consider this for your future plans.

    To whom it may concern:

    I wanted to let someone at Gerber know that it is to my great disappointment to notify you that I will no longer be a Gerber customer. Gerber has chosen to support Jim Zumbo and his recent inflammatory comments toward other outdoor sportsmen. Gerber has been a long time supporter of Mr. Zumbo as were many outdoor enthusiasts. Gerbers' decision to continue to support him leaves outdoorsmen with integrity no choice but to look elsewhere in the future for our needs. My decision to leave Gerber is going to be particularly costly as I am a military survival instructor and I currently use the Gerber LMF II and I have highly recommended this knife to my students for several years along with the Silver Trident, and the Gator line. I encourage Gerber to side with your outdoor enthusiasts customers. Although your senior communications manager Jason Kitzenger believes that you can live on both sides of the fence, your customers will show you that you cannot.

    My next step is to dust off my old Ka-Bar.
