I Hit Him in the Face as Hard as I Could
Homeowner Catches Burglar, Breaks His Nose
January 11, 2007, 02:58 PM
Michael Pease apparently picked the wrong house to break into Friday afternoon.
The 21-year-old suburban Boca Raton man wound up with a broken nose and busted lip when Pat Scibelli came home and found Pease rummaging through his things.
Here's what Scibelli, 53, said went down:
After shopping at Wal-Mart, he and his wife returned to their Palmetto Pines home west of Boca Raton, parked the car in the garage and opened a door that leads to the kitchen.
The refrigerator door was open. All the kitchen cabinets' doors were open.
Scibelli walked into the house and saw a guy wearing latex gloves, a white tank top, shorts and flip flops walk through the door to his office.
"He went to push me and I hit him in the face as hard as I could and broke his nose," Scibelli said.
He and Pease tussled, breaking the office door and falling to the floor of the family room.
They wrestled their way onto the patio, knocking over furniture and landing in Scibelli's swimming pool.
"He pulled me under the water," Scibelli said. " I managed to get his feet and pull him under."
Scibelli then put Pease in a choke-hold and held him there until sheriff's deputies arrived.
Pease had been armed with a knife, Scibelli later learned from deputies, who found it in the pool.
He broke into the house using a crowbar to pry open a door off the master bedroom.
Deputies found the crowbar in Pease's JanSport backpack, which also contained Scibelli's pain medications, sleeping pills, jewelry and a digital camera.
He was charged with armed burglary, burglary with assault or battery and possession of burglary tools.
The sheriff's office is investigating another burglary on Scibelli's street that happened two days prior.
Pease happens to live in the same community as Scibelli.
He's out of the Palm Beach County Jail now and under house arrest.

By apparently using his fists against the burglar's face/head, Scibelli got lucky in that apparently the only thing that got broken was the burglar's nose.
Often hitting someone's face or head is the equivalent of attacking a bowling ball with your fists. Although of course there is soft tissue (nose in this case) much of a person's head is about as strong as a bowling ball. And a hand/fist is an extremely poor choice of body part to use against a bowling ball.
Reason being that the human hand has numerous small, delicate bones that can break easily. And if you have just started a fight with a burglar, you do not want to handicap yourself by starting right off by breaking a bone(s) in your hand.
In addition, the human hand is totally not designed for hitting things. In addition to the joints and small bones that can be harmed and put that hand out of action, the design of the human hand is such that as your clenched fist impacts a strong, bony part of your opponents face, various parts of your fist must compact/compress (much like the shock absorbers on your car/motorcycle) before your fist becomes somewhat of a solid mass that, at least to a degree, is ready to do some damage to your opponent.
If you must hit someone in the face, hit with an open hand and hit with the heel of your hand. That way you will do much more damage to your oppononet and much less damage to your own hand.

Must get overly close to your opponent if you are going to try and hit them in the face/head with your elbow. Besides the forearm is the best to use for the face/head. Your elbow is better for stomach area, etc.0 -

In my younger years I knocked out a few opponents with everlast boxing gloves on. My right hand has a permanent scar from a compound fracture that broke the skin. Opponent was knocked out and had a broken jaw.0 -
Hey; I'm 49, and no, I'm not in the best shape of my life, I had my left shoulder rebuilt one year ago this Monday. I do 50 pushups every morning just to keep it limbered up. If you don't have a gun in your hand you fight like your life depends on it though. Dave 0 -
If the wife and i catch a burgler in the house, i'd hate to see what my wife would inflict on him/her wile wrestling me through the house...Deb wouldda no doubt stomped a "mud-hole" in that dude's azz..

Fer just a second, I thought Mateo was describing his (upcoming) proctoscopy visit!
Maybe next year?[}:)]
Then he can join the ranks of all us ol' Geezers with absolutely no shame, and carry a gun like the rest of us ol' f@rts!

A proper fist is an excellant item for wich to pummel an attacker. I'm just hitin' forty and the last thing some young punk wants to do is underestimate me. I'm a whole helluva lot meaner than when i was 20 sumthin'. In the home and streets, there is no such thing as a fair fight.
P.s. If anybody finds an old Louisville Slugger in the Comite River, please return it.[}:)]0 -
At 65 a 53 old guy seems like a kid. I am still able to punch someone in the nose if need be but the ole endurance is sure not there anymore and it would be a short fight. Wife could kick their butt though!
This kind of outcome is good to advertise, it may scare off some of the younger more impressionable folks from a life of crime. Its good that the guy did not bring the knife into play the outcome may have been a sad one.[:(]0 -
...Never was much for fighting...it hurts. I should have been some sort of negotiator. I usually talked the aggressor into submission.
...It didn't work once. I was about 48 and the jerk was early 30's. He sucker punched me to the temple, and within a second, he met the big end of a bat, just below his sternum. He hadn't seen the bat along my leg. Can you say oooooofff? Really tough to inhale after that. And yes, I was armed. If I'd have drawn, guess who would have gone to jail?0
