Ever just get sick of it all?
I am a dyed in the wool Libertarian, and have donated and voted as such for several years now.
I am as non-partisan as a guy can be. I despise both the Republican and Democratic party equally. They're merely two faces to the same monstrous God as far as I am concerned. Shamelessly statist Totalitarians in waiting, ready to burn the world down for their One True Reality.
What scares me more than anything at the moment is that neither party has been moral, honest, fair, truthful or loyal to their principles for a long time. And people still flock to them because they've forgotten how to think for themselves. They crave zealotry, the purity of purpose, the surrendering of free thought.
People are more conformist, stupid, and hateful than ever, and they have no shame about it. They've surrendered to the lure of The Good Fight, where the good and bad guys are color coded and nobody ever has to think for themselves. All you have to do is spread the word and swing the axe-handle for The Cause. It must be nice when you're always right and the other half of the country is always wrong.
In this democratic nation of ours, The Majority is the closest thing to sacrosanct we have. Since one man can no longer effectively enforce his totalitarian will on the people, it is left to many men with one mind to do it on the rest. Instead of allowing a King to oppress the many, we've allowed the Many to oppress the Few. A fine trade.
Thus, the openly stated purpose of either the Reds or the Blues is to seize the Majority (like the sans-culottes storming the Bastille) and inflict their standards on the rest of the population forcibly. Since they are the one true enlightened party and everyone else is monsters and heathens to be subdued at any cost.
Perfection means never having to say you're sorry.
Doesn't that disgust you?

I can't cast a vote that will essentially be 1/2 of a vote for Hillary or Obama or whoever the far left nominates. I am Libertarian at heart but the Libertarian party has about the same chances of winning as the Green party.
I know this post will spawn cliches about "the lesser of two evils" and all of that nonsense. However, a vote for anyone other than the Republican candidate will be basically like casting 1/2 of a vote for something much much worse.0 -

I'll agree that there aren't any great choices for the 2008 election. The partisan squabbling in the House and Senate is childish. There is not strong leadership in Warshington right now. When was there true strong leadership?

Like I was saying just the other day- look at all the good that would be done by one of those big rocks hitting the Earth and leading to the termination of human life. There are candidates that have a fairly strict moral platform. Look at Huckabee the Gov of Arkansas and Mitt Romney of Mass.
Problem is I dont think the anti abortion candidates have much of a chance of winning. Our society has changed, Urban women want to be able to make the choice. Its a religious issue and should be off the political platform.
Hillary will eat them alive in the polls by moving them into the religious right conservative movement.0 -

Mostly just trying to see if there is anyone else out there who hasn't jumped the Two-Party "Us good, rest of country evil" bandwagon.0 -
There is a really easy way to stop a bunch of the crap in Congress.
First: Two term limit on any elected national political office (i.e. House, Senate, Pres., VP., etc.). Once you serve two terms in ANY role, you are done. Period.
Second: Get rid of the "Retirement Plan". Elected officials should have to count on the same plan that the rest of masses depend on, whether it is SS or not. They shouldn't be allowed to make decisions regarding the future of the masses without being subjected to the same.
Third: Get rid of the party system all together. Make each candidate run based on his/her own topics, not the ones that are fed to them by their parties. Now, I realize that some will actually fall in line with one another, but instead of getting "weeded" out during the primaries, everyone would have to choose a candidate that most fits their ideals. If that means there are 200 names on a ballot, so be it.
Fourth: This one goes with the one above. Get rid of the Electoral College. It was a great idea when it was put into place, but with the technology that we have today, the popular vote can be tabulated quickly and precisely. We don't have to wait two weeks for a representive from Montana to ride his/her wagon to New York to find out how the vote went there anymore.

Ya missed the whole point. Good, bad or ugly there are worse places to be and worse systems around. When you vote, you don't waste a thing. Many men and women scracificed much and some have died for you to be able to do just that. Those that choose not to vote so be it, but whinning will not get 1 single issue resolved. So, don't vote and let someone else pick your leaders, good or bad ! IMHO 0 -

Oh, I don't doubt for a second thqat there are much worse
places and systems. I also understand that many have served and some
have died to defend this system. That's the sad part, is they are

People who pull the "A vote for anybody other than the Republican is a vote for the Democrat" piece are exactly why we are in this lousy situation.
To be frank, I am almost at the point where I'd be willing to vote for anybody who took an honestly held set of political beliefs and ran with them, without subterfuge or shame. "I am a Communist. Vote for me or don't, but I think I could really do good things for this country."
I'd rather be ruled by someone that I fundamentally despise on every political issue, but can respect as an intelligent, earnest, and honest human being...

Mercury--Republicans only go on the offensive and get all "conservative" when they are in the minority and backed into a corner. Did you see how long it took Bush to get his dander up over something? The "new tone" BS is killing the Republican party.
With that being said, politics and Presidential races are all about stamina. There is NOBODY in any "alternate party" that has started strongly enough at this point to have a hope of overtaking anyone. We as individuals can get as ticked off and fired up as we want. You aren't going to move the masses in such a way that you'll give hope to a candidate that isn't already starting to gain some momentum. Take a Political Science class. "this mentality" is one of realism--not fantasy. I don't live in some little fantasy world where "one man can make a difference" and all that hokey crap.
Energy is better spent (and spent more efficiently) trying to work within the Republican Party. Get used to the fact that it's a 2-party system and stop trying to bail out everytime the party doesn't go the way you want it to 100% of the time. THAT'S the politically suicidal mentalitly.0
