You were only shooting into the back stop? If so I would of made sure to explain that to police. Were you in city limits?

Were you on someone else's property or public land? Was there a house or park or trail along the line of where you were shooting? What did he lecture you about?

If it was over something stupid like "you can't do that because I say so," I'd tell him to take a hike (behind his back and out of earshot, of course[;)]).

But if he was letting you know that perhaps there was a hiking trail just beyond your barrier or a house just beyond the tree line and to be more careful, well, it never hurts to be more careful.

I only have 3 acers and I shoot out here all the time. My backstop is out near the end of my property line (my property is odd shaped and has a narrow patch that runs about 200 yards) and there is nothing back there for over a mile beyond that.

I have a few other nieghbors who also shoot from time to time just not as often as I do.

I have never had a problem shooting here and was even told by a sheriff that if other officers found out I had this little range they might ask to use it from time to time as they have to travel a little ways to get a place to shoot any distances. I told him to bring them out that I was willing to let them shoot any time they wanted and I may even join in to see how I would match up against them![:D]

Well today I was hanging out at my friend's house and we were plinking with my .22 with his mom's boyfriend. We shot for a little while into a dirt backstop. I guess it turns out he only had 3 acres instead of the 5 I thought he had. It was still out in the middle of nowhere. So once we finished, a cop car pulled up, and an officer got out and started yelling at me and my friend (after the adult left) so we got a good 20 minute lecture. It really made me notice how hyper people get and how ridiculous today's gun laws are. 40 years ago, this would be completely normal behavior. I guess now I know not to shoot any more except at the range.

here its the armed responce & chopper !! ouch[:D]

I live two miles out of town on 10 acres. I have a neighbor who is a retired state trooper who was on the states sniper team. I also have a couple other neighbors with old Jap rifles. I shoot the most lead, but the folks in town say it sounds like WW III out here. We say good! People don't come messing around here either. Life is good.

I've got just under 12 Acres, about `7 miles from town, and I shoot a lot. The guy across the highway, a couple of miles away shoots, too.

Once in awhile, I get a call from the WWII vet about 600 yards away asking if everything is OK, and I quit shooting for a couple of hours, out of courtesy. Even though he has never objected or complained.

    "Thank God I'm a Country Boy !!"

Well we were on a hill, shooting down into the ground. His main deal was that he only had 3 acres instead of 5, and not a "county approved backstop" and was saying how it can ricochet off of the ground and travel through a quarter of a mile through thick woods and hit the owner of the next property over that he suggested might decide to walk the fence line of his property through the dense forest. It really just seemed like he was on a power trip, just trying to scare a couple honest teenagers trying to have some fun with our .22s like so many generations before us.
