South Dakota Question
Found out that I am going to have enough vaccation next year to take my trip out to South Dakota[:p], Yay! Me and one of my buddies and our ladies are going. Going to be doing a little site-seeing and some prarie dog and coyote hunting. Would like to hunt antelope as well, but I am guessing that you don't just get a tag the first year you apply(out of state anyways). Anyways, my question is when is the best time to go out to South Dakota?
P.S.--Anybody who lives in or knows someone who live in SD and wants some prarie dogs and/or coyotes exterminated let me know(talking sometime next year).

Both of the Dakotas should be combined and then re-split to make an East and a West Dakota. East Dakota: any time May through July is peak biomass production, meaning prettiest in terms of plants. West Dakota, figure May through mid-June if you're southern to catch the big pretties, but the best time probably is late May. That's when you get spring flush.
None of the above contains any information about hunting, but I'm sure somebody will weigh in with an opinion on that.0 -
Don't drive across the Dakotas. You can get the same effect without leaving home.
Just sit inside your garage, in the driver's seat of your car and look at the wall for 10 hours. After the 10 hours, get out and slam your hand in the car door until you pass out. Same effect.
Edit: Don't stop at Wall Drug... It's a strange combination of all the worst garage/yard/rummage sales you've ever seen, plus quite a few you haven't, all multiplied by infinity.0 -
naahh.. ks, sd and ia are all the same. flat and booooring. ne is flat but not boring. wyoming is totaly different, hilly as colorado but lots of dirt. I know it's good hunting because ppl from ne go to wy to hunt. 0 -

I can't tell you a lot about South Dakota, but the one thing I can tell you is don't be fooled by the name South Dakota. I damn near froze to death there in December of 1969, and I've Wintered over in Antarctica. I know cold. South Dakota is cold. 0 -
Guys you have to learn to appreciate subtlety. SD is a fine state to drive through (or motorcycle, done it both ways) and not boring as I recall, lots of interesting glacial ponds, and West River SD is a great place. The Black Hills area is the Banana Republic of South Dakota (well they call it that, but I admit I did not see bananas growing there but did seen snow in July at Rushmore). Lots of history in the Black Hills, lots of History in the Pine Ridge region.
You are going to have problems seeing the sights when most appealing and hunting when legal or most effective, especially for pronghorn. Best choose which to do. Also, sort out before you go where you are going to hunt. Not a lot of public land where you can simply go hunt.
I also like Kansas and Nebraska, Iowa not so much.0 -
Already in the process of trying to find an area to hunt. The main issue as far as game is going to be the coyote and prarie dog. I will probably wait on the antelope, as I want to make sure that we go during a time of the year when the scenery is plentiful for the ladies.

...Get the heck off the interstate, and there's plenty to see. Turn off onto roads that aren't on the map, and see where they go. That's what we've done from W. Virginia to Nevada. Stop in tiny towns for breakfast, and if you don't act like a dork, you'll meet some mighty fine folks.
...By the way, Zulu, the BadLands Bar, across from Wall Drug serves a really good bison burger and great fries. (The only reason to stop in that tourist trap of a town.)0
