gun safe question
I bought a used safe about five years ago. At that time, I called the manufacturer to see how fire resistant that model was supposed to be. I never got a good answer, other than, at the time it was built they were using a ceramic fire liner? or ceramic insulation? Whatever it is, it isnt very thick, probably 3/8" or so.
My question is --how do I increase the fire resistance?
I'm sure it would help to add a layer or two of 5/8" "Sheetrock"
under the top and three sides. But I was wondering if yall had any suggestions or experience with this sort of stuff.

I am looking to get a gun safe SOON. I am willing to spend up to $1000. It needs to be able to fit at least 10 rifles and 10 handguns. What do you guys/gals recommend, and what brands do you think I should stay away from? Thanks! - Toe [8D] 0 -
Do you have a gun safe to protect the guns from the people in your house or from outside people who might want to steal them ? I am debating what size safe to buy. I live in a very safe area and I think I mostly want the safe to keep my newphews and nieces and other kids away from the guns. However, I wondered if I should just go for the big safe and spend the money. Do you think a 1000lb safe is enough for robbers ? 0 -
Been looking on the net and my home town for a good gun safe. Read in this forum to get the biggest you can and bolt it down.

My wife and I are the only ones to know the combination.
If we were to die together, such as car accident, what is the best way to pass on the combination without giving it to someone today?

get a Champion Safe there the best.
electronic? Digital lock, is awsome if / when the battery dies, just open up the cover and put in a new one. (you should replace the battery every two years ?)0 -
What's your price range? Yes, you can't get one too big! Bolting down is a plus. Remember, a modest size safe weighs around 700# +/-. Add maybe 400# of contents and you have a handfull - but bolts are cheap!
The electronic locks are great. I have three, and have had a small problem with one. Sometimes it forgets my code but the factory code is available even after a battery failure. It's in permenant memory.
I'll admit that these aren't top of the line locks. If all the electronics fail you have a key to unlock the safe after removing the number panel on the door. No big deal.
Stack-On and Sentry have modest priced safes that probably can do the job for you.0 -
Price range is from $700-800. I would like to put it in my garage but was worried that if the electronic lock fails I would be out of luck tying to open it up to get my guns.
I want something that may take awhile to get into if I get broken into.
I know WalMart sells the Sentry but have a local dealer that sells Champion...I want to get something good.

I own that Winchester safe from Sam's. I am very please with it. Take your vitamins before you get ready to handle that thing!0 -
I have seen some very good prices at Costco and Home Depot on specific brands. You have to buy what they are selling at the moment.
I like my Fort Knox, Its top quality and they are always available to move the safe for $50. They use an electric stair climber maching if you are upstairs in an apartment or condo and will bolt it in for you. But they are not cheap. My battery is still working fine after five years.[:0][:0]
Most stack-on and homac safes are very inexpensive and not fire proofed. Some can be defeated by a determined thief with a crowbar.0 -
Just remember that the "capacity" is rated with BB guns, figure that it will only hold 1/2 of capacity when loaded with real guns 0 -
