The good old day's?
THE SPOILED UNDER-30 CROWD!!!
If you are 30 or older you will think this is
Hilarious!!!!
When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious stories about how hard things were when they were growing up; what with walking
twenty-five miles to school every morning ... uphill
BOTH ways
yadda, yadda, yadda
And I remember promising myself that when I grew up,
there was no way I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on
kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it! But now that I'm
over the ripe old age of thirty, I can't help but look around and notice the
youth of today.
You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my
childhood, you live in a Utopia! And I hate to say it, but you kids today don't know how good you've got it!
I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have The
Internet . If we wanted to know
something, we had to go to the library and
look it up ourselves, in the
card catalog!!
There was no email!! We had to actually write
somebody a letter ..with a
pen! Then you had to walk all the way across the
street and put it in the
mailbox and it would take like a week to get there!
There were no MP3's or Napsters! You wanted to
steal music, you had to
hitchhike to the record store and shoplift it
yourself! Or you had to wait
around all day to tape it off the radio and the DJ'd
usually talk over the
beginning and mess it all up!
We didn't have fancy stuff like Call Waiting! If you
were on the phone and somebody else called they got a busy signal, that's
it!
And we didn't have fancy Caller ID Boxes either!
When the phone rang, you
had no idea who it was! It could be your school,
your mom, your boss, your
bookie, your drug dealer, a collections agent, you
just didn't know!!! You had
to pick it up and take your chances, mister!
We didn't have any fancy Sony Playstation video
games with high-resolution
3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games
like "Space Invaders" and
"asteroids". Your guy was a little square! You
actually had to use your
imagination! And there were no multiple levels or
screens, it was just one screen
forever!
And you could never win. The game just kept getting
harder and harder and
faster and faster until you died! Just like LIFE!
When you went to the movie theater there no such
thing as s stadium seating!
All the seats were the same height! If a tall guy
or some old broad with a hat
sat in front of you and you couldn't see, you were
just screwed!
Sure, we had cable television, but back then that
was only like 15 channels...there was no on screen menu and no remote
control! You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was
on! And forget channel surfing! You had to get off your butt and walk over to the TV to change the channel...there was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday Morning. Do you hear what I'm saying!?! We had to wait ALL WEEK
for cartoons, you spoiled little brats!
And we didn't have microwaves, if we wanted to heat something up, we had to
use the stove or go build a frigging fire ..imagine that! If we wanted
popcorn, we had to use that stupid Jiffy Pop thing and shake it over the stove
forever like an idiot.
That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids
today have got it too easy.
You're spoiled. You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1980![:0]

You, my friend, may be one of the same "SPOILED KIDS" of wich you speak....[;)]

Yep. 3 channels on TV. I mostly listened to AM radio. WVOK out of Birmingham, sometimes a local station in Marion, at night it was WLS, WSM or the one in New Orleans (can't remember the ID). There was a barber shop/pool hall near the elementary school. Used to hand out there until my mother got off work. Pool tables and a foosball table. Sometimes I'd walk a couple blocks from school to the Firestone store and buy a box of .22 shorts for my father's Win. 74. IIRC they were .25/.30 for the red & white Remington box.[:D]0 -
You guys remind me of a cartoon I saw once. A man and a boy were standing in the snow. The man was in snow up to his knees. The boy was in snow up to his chest. The man was saying to the boy "You think this is deep snow? When I was your age we had snow up to your chest."
I'm waiting for the guys who grew up in the 40's to check in. We have a couple who grew up in the 20's and 30's. [:D]0 -
50's-60's for me. Can't say I remember undue hardship. Either stupid, or someone else was pulling my weight. Joe 0 -
Let's not forget writing papers for school. My son is currently in his second year of college. He was lamenting about all the papers he has written this year.
I pulled out an old file of all of the papers I wrote in Grad School.
He looked at the paper and asked what kind of printer I used. I introduced him to what a type written paper looks like.
When I told him about wanting to move a section from one page to another, there is no cut and paste, you just start over typing from the change. His reaction, "that would suck"0 -

The ship I was on in 1976 got a new IBM "word processor?", I don't remember what they called it. It was a regular IBM Selectric typewriter with a side unit that used cards which amounted to floppy disks. The side unit was as big as a filing cabinet. You could type your page and if you made a mistake you could backspace and type over the mistake and the side unit would correct it on the card. Then you throw away the original, put in a clean sheet of paper and the typewriter would make a clean original.
The Chief Yeoman hated that thing with a purple passion. He said with contraptions like that, these kids will never learn to type. [:D]0 -

Anyone remember using a "slide rule" for calculations?
I doubt anyone under 30 even knows what it is.0 -
Cell phones, schmell phones! Heck when I was a teen we had party lines. We had to wait until the old geezers got off the phone with their doctors before we could call our girlfriends. Now if you will excuse me youngun's, I have to call my physician about my cholesterol test.[:D] 0 -
James RK: Yes, I am one of those guys born in the '20's. Never heard of the word "television" till after getting back from Europe in WW 2.
Radio was "our thing" back in the '20's 30's etc. Hard times in the 60's and 70's ?? Damn if I can recall many hard times then. Bad times were the depression of '29 and WW 2. After getting home from WW 2 it was smooth sailing but a lot of hard work for me but nothing I couldnt easily handle by then. I do miss the "Old Days" for many things but sure do love the modern day comforts in living.0 -
