? on ATF "compliance inspections"
This is odd. I rec'd. the "FFL Newsletter" a few days ago.
Mind you, its the January, 07 edition.[:o)]
Today I rec'd. a letter from ATF about a Curios/Relics seminar sched. for June 18, for the So. FL area C&R holders.
From the letter:
We are presenting this seminar to discuss information on ATF laws and regulations that affect your activities as they relate to the acquisition and disposition of firearms, as well as the proper maintenance of required records.
Has anyone here attended this seminar?
Is this a prelude to an increase in compliance inspections for C&R license holders?
If you're a C&R holder, have you ever been audited for compliance?

...I got the newsletter a few days ago also, but nothing about a C&R seminar. I have no doubt that with the huge number of new C&Rs issued in the last few years, that some are abusing them. I hope they leave us alone, but if they catch a few "dealing", it'll make things hard for the rest of us.
...And no, I've never been audited, but I have all my T's crossed and I's dotted, so, no fear.0 -

I have 21 C&R purchases, of which 5 I have "disposed", ie: logged under dispostion. These I sold to the same person, my best friend.
Those that I sold have since been replaced with the excact same type of firearm, in much better condition, and are in my collection.
To my knowledge, this is legal. Hope the ATF feels the same way.0 -

I think your OK here. Can you imagine them actually trying to police all the C&R firearms that have moved around all these years with only hand written records? Mission impossible. Never say never, but I think their perception is that we are harmless collectors, not dealers, which is a correct assumption. Also, due to the words "Curio & Relics" they think the firearms we are interested in are obsolete, ineffective, and not deadly weapons like modern "assault rifles".[8D] I think the dealers have more to sweat from them than we do.0 -
What will happen in a few years, as the "assult weapons" start to enter C&R-hood by age? The first semi-only AR type rifles made, the first FALs, etc. are close to 50 years old (or are already, at least the FA stuff)... What would it be like in 20 years? 0 -

Good question. The M1 Carbine is really an "assault rifle", it's a high capacity magazine fed fully or semi automatic .30 cal military weapon and it's C&R. We'll see what happens.0 -

Nothing will happen. The ATF will probably just decide not to include them in their list of C&R approved firearms.
If it isn't in the ATF's list, good luck getting anyone to transfer it to you on a C&R. It may be 50+ years old, but most dealers ignore this rule and only go by whats in the book. Dealers tend to be paranoid about this stuff, since even the smallest infraction can basically destroy their livelihood.0 -

...I have a few more purchases, but about the same number of dispositions. It's called "cherry picking." Buy two or three, keep the best for your collection and dispose of the excess. I write and keep all receipts, so I can show that I've never made a profit. In fact, none of my dispositions were strictly for cash. They were swaps for other guns or traded for gunsmith services. I think that we're following the letter of the law, as well as the intent.0
