Informal Ballistic Test
Found a genuine USMC kevlar helemt, small, couldn't imagine anyone with a head that tiny. Marine Corps declined to pay shipping for me to send it wherever they wanted so decided to see if them things would really stop a bullet.
Started with the FiveSeven, SS195 round. Made a dent on the inside of the helmet, did not penetrate. Sort of dissapointed as thois round is advertised as being capable of penetrating a level IIIA vest.
Moved to a 357 Sig with a 125 gr hollow point. Knocked the kevlar off the table, less damage to the kevlar material than the FiveSeven but moved it a lot further, obviously a lot more energy expended. Bet if someone were to take a hit with it, it would get their attention and then some.
Got the Smith 1006 out, hot 180gr HydraShock. Knocked the helmet way off the table and sent it rolling. Did not penetrate but shredded the kevlar material. Bullet was recovered neatly mushroomed between the cover and the helmet exterior. Absolutley positive that if someone were wearing a kevlar and took a hit in the head at 10 feet with a 10mm, they would have one heck of a headache but no lead in the head.
Moved up to something with a little more power and got out the AR. Boys and girls, it made a mess, in one side and out the other. Not survivable but then didn't expect otherwise. Had the helmet on a wooden fence post and it went throough it too. 55gr Wolf if anyone wants to know.
Our government is equipping our troops with what I think is a good piece of equipment, heavy as the dickens, will protect against shrapnel and a hand gun bullet but about useless against 5.56 at 15 feet.
Stay tuned, looking for someone to test kevlar to see how well it protects against alien abduction. Well just kidding on the alien abduction thing.

Very interesting test.
One suggestion I would make is to stabilize the helmet. If a guy was wearing it, it would pretty much stay in place when the bullet hit.0 -
