Didn't appear to hurt me too bad. Day traders probably lost their a$$es though.

I have been in the stock market for about 18 years now and it is just another bumb that will not affect me one way or another. If you understand Dollar Cost Averaging then it can even be a good thing for the long run

I see dips in the market like what happened today as an opportunity to buy low.
The simplest rule of stock market is buy low and sell high. Look at the market right now the same as you would if you saw bushmaster AR15s on sale at 500.00 a piece and you know that in a few months they will be back at 800.00 plus. Doesn't take long to figure out that now is the time to buy all the Bushmaster AR15s that you can afford.

One day is not a trend.
Do this for a while, and I'll be buying. [;)]

Exactly. I checked the stocks I watch constantly and they are down of course but not enough to encourage a mass buy in.

I actually didn't come out too badly, much to RunForest's disappointment.

My father, OTOH, got nailed pretty hard, but his portfolio isn't quite as diversified as mine. My hardest-hit stock was Chipolte which went down $3.63 for the day. Most of my stocks went down less than $1.50 by the close of the bell.

Of course, any loss is a bit painful, but there's no need to panic. I'm in it for the long haul, and, in fact, today or tomorrow might be an interesting buying opportunity.

    Buy low, sell high.

I gave up on individual stock years ago and only buy into Funds reflecting large index funds. Much safer and easier to read.

But with less risk comes less reward.

I do my own research and I try to keep up with my stocks. I honestly do very little trading -- I keep stocks for the long haul and the only reason I sell them is when the fundamentals change or when there's some seriously bad management decisions being made.

Of course, I sold a crapload of them in order to pay for tuition and not have to work while going to school, but that's a different story.

Yeah the gold stocks got hammered yesterday as well. Mine are about average today. Some losses, some gains.

After two days of big losses though, I am warming up the account buy more stocks at great prices.

Do it for a living. Yesterday was a fine day. My clients that are in or nearing retirement didn't loose hardly anything. Everyone else was well positioned to take advantage of the correction and they are doing fairly well today.

If you did not sell, the loses are only on paper, which does not count. Be patient, you are young, it will go back up and higher. The thing you have to do is what most small investors do not do. Buy low, sell high, and be prepared to ride out the troughs. Most gain conficence when the market is high and buy in then. they panic when it drops and sell low. You will lose every time that way.

Remember, buy low, sell high, buy low, sell high, buy low, sell high...

A little loss here, but as others have said I'am in it for the long haul. Over the last couple of years I've been getting 12% to 15% return.

That's not true. Honestly, that's more of a way for investors to trick themselves into thinking that they didn't lose anything. In reality, your net worth is down or up, depending on the value of your portfolio. You don't realize your loss or gain until you sell, but that "paper" loss most certainly does affect your bottom line.

Yep, the stockmarket plays hell with the 401k!
Iam pretty safe got it spread out into 12 differant funds.
Sometimes you win, but you also loose.
Was doing really good until yesterday, took a $7,000+ paper hickey.
    Mama took a bigger hickey!!

The main thing is to just not worry about it. Don't go out and buy a new boat when the market goes up, and don't buy a new rope or razor if the market goes down.

Sit tight and wait it out, the long term trend for longer than any of us has been alive is in one direction. Some of the best buying opportunities anyone will ever see come during depressions and recessions, just be ready to take advantage of them if they show up, and don't pay much attention to day to day changes.

Time is the best investment friend you have, use it.[:)]

Well, if it is any consolation, AlbertLum/RunForest is gleeful that you got hit so hard.

I lost about $12k yesterday but I bought like crazy. Within a few weeks it will be back to normal and I will have gotten a discount on all the stocks I bought. It was a great day if you know how to play.
