That one is usually attributed to Texas, and is in serious doubt as to validity.

A bale of hay weighs 50-60 pounds, and stronger men than that one struggle more than he is when the bale is on the end of a pitchfork and held out in front like that snake is. Snopes says undetermined, but doesn't seem very convinced. I think it is a hoax.

Big snake but I think they embellished the weight a bit, I don't believe that gentleman could hoist 97 pounds in that position without a little more strain than what's seen.

    Wanna see a snake?

Next time you're out in the tall grass, remember this one.

This snake was recently found at the J & L Tack located just south of Poplar Bluff

on Highway 67 south of Town.

A reminder that these creatures are actually out there and no matter what you believe,

Sometimes they should get not only prescriptive rights to be there but the full right of way!

    9 feet, 1 inch - 97 lbs.

    DEEP-FRIED RATTLESNAKE

1 medium-sized rattlesnake (3-4 lbs.), cut into steaks
    1/2 cup flour
    1/4 cup cornmeal
    1/4 cup cracker crumbs
    1/2 cup milk
    1 egg
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (not garlic salt)
    1 teaspoon salt
    Dash pepper

Mix dry ingredients. Whisk milk into beaten egg and use to dip snake steaks.
Then coat them with dry ingredients. Fry, uncovered, in 400 degree oil until brown.

Yum,Yum! It sorta tastes like chicken.
This is where I got the picture[:D][:D][:D]

It's really an old trick. Just like the fisherman holding his catch at arms length in front of him when the picture is taken. It makes the fish look bigger. I seriously doubt that litle alluminum catch stick could hold 97lbs, let alone that skinny little dude. An Eastern Diamondback can get up to 8 feet in length, but even when they get that big they weigh little more than 20lbs.

A few years ago I visited a a place called Bear country in I think it was North Dakota. They had rattle snakes in glass cages and also did a demo with a guy handling one. They had a sign up that said if anyone could supply them with a ratle snake 8ft or longer they would give that person $75000.

    LOL.

My final stint with the insurance company was down in Hobbs, NM after they had a nasty hailstorm.

As I was driving on the highway, snakes were sunning themselves on the highway (of which in the couple of hundred miles I was on it, I was the only car on the road most the time). I was doing 75mph and I was keeping my feet up on the driver's seat of my car.

Yeah, I know, silly as hell, but I hate snakes. I ran over quite a few of them. I was happy. I'd do it again.

And, if I had a minigun, I'd turn every snake I could find into a fine, red paste.

I'm maybe 90mi. from Poplar Bluff. We have one small area around
here that some Eastern Diamondbacks can be found, but no monsters
    like that...that I know of.

...seen a lot of rattlers, but never to match the size claim of this one.

...A deer lease I was on years ago in Llano County, was just outside of Ponitoc, Texas. At the general store in town they had the biggest skin Ive ever seen, a little over 8', huge snake...[;)]

...Snake skin makes crap boots, way too fragile and take a LOT of care; besides looking funny (pimp daddy, NYC, midnight cowboy "look").

...The scales on snakeskin will dry and curl up if not conditioned a LOT. Buy some birds (ostrich), very little care, and nothing fits better. Ostrich skin has a "memory" to it (kangaroo has a little of this virtue)...and will stretch each time you pull it on, to fit perfectly; and very little care, and are tough as nails.

...The meat is white like fish meat. The only part of the snake that has any meat on it (enough to eat) is along the backbone. Throw a little Makers Mark in the marinade, mmm. Chili out of rattler? That would taste a LOT like chili made with chicken breast, eewwwhh!...[;)]

Once I was riding my Kawasaki on a two lane road which for about two hundred yards was seperated by a concrete island. At the far end of the island I almost ran over a big rattler, coiled, with his head in the air, he watching a car coming from the opposite direction, I went to the first driveway, turned around and came back. Apparently he had struck at the car, it had gone over him, he was writhing around on the pavement. Big snake. Wish I could have gotten him. Never tasted rattlesnake but always wanted to. Will keep that recipe in case I do. Looks like the recipe a game warden's wife gave me to prepare snapping turtle. Never got to do that either.

Hello Everyone--I live in Poplar Bluff MO and no one here has heard the story-except of the internet, nor did it make any of the news here? I have been quizzed about it by out-of-town relatives and a friend acturally called the Tack Shop and they didn't know anything about it either?

    Sounds like another "Urban Legand!"

That is bull,.........that "guy" could not hold 97 pounds, on the end of a flimsy aluminum pole, with his forearms.
I would say more like 30 pounds tops, as I killed a 6 plus footer myself years ago, and it could not have weighed more than 20 pounds at the most, and that is being "liberal".
I love some of these internet stories that get passed around without validation of any kind.

agreed Marc,in 94 on a forest fire in BUENA VISTA,VA i killed a 6'8.5in timber rattler, one morning early laying in the dust of a forest service road,it had 15 buttons on its rattle, and weighed 14lbs and some odd ounces[on a zebco fishing scale],we didnt have a cooler or time to skin and keep it,but i did keep the rattle,i have killed several in virginia and west virginia only because we were working in the area and being remote we just couldn't take the chance of someone being bitten, snakes wont travel far from the den site unless food and water are not avalible to them, they have their place in this world too, just not under my feet on a forest fire[:D] Loko

Living fairly close to there I'm anxious to see their reply.

Urban legend. An 8 foot, 12 pound western diamond back is a giant, 9 feet one inch and 97 pounds is a myth. Western Diamondbacks also do not occur in Missouri. The closest records are for Oklahoma and Arkansas.

Not saying that it is not a big snake,.......but the weight is greatly exaggerated.
That fellow, is not exactly stout, and he doesn't even appear to be straining. I am a good bit bigger than that guy, and if I had 97 pounds, on the end of an aluminum pole, with my arms partially extended,...............I wouldn't be smilin"!
That plus my own experience with snakes,...........says, once again,........BS![;)]

quote:I have seen this snake photo and was able to identify it as an eastern
diamondback rattlesnake. However, the background of this photo is
reminiscent of Florida or Georgia - not Poplar Bluff. The grasses are
not the common grasses you see down there. The native range for
    Eastern
Diamondbacks exclusively coastal states from Louisiana to North
Carolina. For a snake that healthy to make it to Poplar Bluff is
unlikely because their habitat needs are not available outside their
range. It would be like you and I hiking a thousand miles through a
desert without provisions. My suspicion is the photo came from the
deep south and is being passed off as a local find.

Thanks for your interest in conservation.

If this is the photo I think it is (I can't see it) then it is a Western Diamondback and not an Eastern. Background looks like west Texas grassland. Easterns do get longer, Westerns get heavier.

Here in Oklahoma, that snake would be considered a baby, I'm just kidding, it is huge. Wouldn't it make some cool boots.[:D]
