They're going to sell the same amount of gas, whether it's one day or the next.

They'll loose 300M on the 15th, then make it up on the 16th.

You'd have to have everyone take public transportation, walk, or bike to work on a few days in a row to even have a marginal effect on them.

Remember, these people make tens of Billions a year, 300 million is a drop in the bucket.

The best way would be for as many people as possible to take public transit, walk, or ride a bike for a week. Only then would they be hurting.

In the mean time, the monopoly oil buisness will only continue to get richer at our expense.

so before you start advocating doing something like that i assume you looked at something like this:

    A Primer on Gasoline Prices

until the greenies are thrown out of government and we start building nuclear power plants, drilling in CA and AK, building more refineries this is only going to get worse and trying to punish a business is a very soc-dem-liberal thing to do, and this thing was started by those people for what purpose i don't know.

instead of fighting them, join them -- buy their stock and enjoy its healthy growth.

This sounds like a great idea, but it isn't. It doesn't work. Mostly because it results in more fuel being purchased before and after the specified day. Which means equal income for the oil companies.

I wish Americans would stop acting so naive about oil prices. Does anyone think its odd that oil prices are rising oil and consumption is too? You shouldn't, thats economics 101. The oil companies are smart. They know about supply and demand. They know how to maximize their profits. They are a business, that is their goal. Gas prices will continue to rise as long as Americans are willing to pay for it. When demand starts to drop off, gas prices will plateau, assuming the price is still higher than the cost.

I love watching the eving news, where they interview Joe Blow on the street about gas prices. Why is gas the only commodity for which the average citizen is an expert? My guess is that if they interviewed an actual expert, that expert would explain why gas prices are what they are. This explanation would not have anything to do with conspiracies and evil empires. It might, however, end the gas price media frenzy which is making a lot of money for the broadcast companies. Surprisingly, the broadcasting companies are more interested in turning a buck than they are in producing truthful news programs, go figure.

Sorry for the rant, I just get tired of all the people that complain about something when they don't have the slightest idea about it. You can't get all your info off of blogs. Just because you found it on the internet doesn't make it true. In fact, now a days I like to assume everything on the internet is false and work from there.

and again: "they", "these people", "at our expense"...

a purpose of a business in free market is to make money for its owners at expense of its customers. if you want to share their profits -- invest in them, or get education and get a job with them.

it starts with these things, then it moves onto "let's take their profits and share them among the meek" and finally you have United States of Soviet Socialist America.

Well, what is your idea for us to do in the mean time? Keep taking it up the ass like the neo-fascists want us to? Let me clue you in, pal. The sainted Republican party has been taken over by far-right religious zealots and oil magnates. They are taking over America and will destroy it. The Democrats are no better and no worse, just the opposite end of a sh!++y stick.

We, the people, have the power and it is time we exercise it.

It's something, which is a hell of a lot better than nothing, which is what you are going to do.

I'm still spreading this, encouraging EVERY REAL FREEDOM-LOVING AMERICAN TO ACT. I'm still not going to buy gas on the 15th.

If you really believe that gas prices are a fair reflection of market value, and not kept artificially high, then you are part of the problem.

I am quoting the text in full to reiterated posted above.

this is exactly what certain individuals were proclaiming for about a decade before the great october revolution of 1917. very dangerous ideas, too bad they are rooted in some people's minds without full understanding of the ideas or their meaning or their consequences.

you, pal, is not ready to be free, i would certainly not sign all Americans to your socialist propaganda.

Yup, profits are bad. If only big companies' profits were lower, then maybe we could get this damned economy kickstarted somehow.

    Source: American Petroleum Institute.

A well-financed mouthpiece for big oil.

Chevron's quarterly profits are routinely in the hundred-billion range.

again, this data is publicly available, please do your own better research then.

and yet again, you obviously do have an agenda, so far you've been echoing everything dems are telling you to say. it is not in your interest to go that route if you value your freedom.

not to mention that you just let out an outright lie: chevron made roughly $4.7B in Q1 2007.

anyways, moot point to discuss something who believes something religiously [:)]

    good night.

when did it happen that profits became bad? i work for a rather large corporation and everyone's up to raising our fees and making more money but when it comes to "oil companies" they for some reason want to almost nationalize them and their executives jailed and tortured. amazing.

well, socialism, just like [modern] liberalism, is a decease (not a mental disorder as savage would want you to believe, mental disorders aren't contagious and aren't easily treated, these two can be treated just fine at early stages with a healthy dose of Paine, Jefferson, Franklin, etc.)

    http://www.snopes.com/politics/gasoline/nogas.asp

    Quoted from Snopes.com:
"The primary effect of the "gas-out" boycott is to hurt those at the very end of the oil-to-gas chain: the independent service station operators, who have the least say in setting gasoline prices. (Independents are at the mercy of a very volatile oil market and operate on thin profit margins, and even a single day's disruption of supply or demand can wipe out many days' worth of hard earned profits.) As such, the "gas-out" is a punch on the nose delivered to the wrong person."

So if you want to put the small guys out of business, go ahead with your boycott.
The biggest problem with the price of gas is not the oil companys, it is the taxes that we pay on each gal. Here in CA our taxes are over $.50 per gal. I put 25 gal in my van yesterday and it cost me just over $80.00, but $12.50 went towards taxes. I do that every other day so by the end of the month I am paying over $300.00 in taxes alone. Do you think that the little guy at the corner store made that much, or the big companys? Sorry to have to say it, but you barking up the wrong tree.

BTW: how is school going Badwrench? I haven't seen you here in a while, good to see you back.

The boycott will only work if it is focussed on one oil company, with the gas that would have been purchased from them being purchased from a competitor.

If I see a focussed boycott, I will participate. If not, I won't.

even then, it would have to be a continuous, never ending boycott. We all have to get our gas from somewhere. Then, the competitor's prices would go up to compensate for the new demand (since a boycott would effectively remove a supplier and the constant demand would be spread over fewer producers.) Then, they'd make more profits, we'd have to boycott them, and the whole damned process would have to start over again and nothing will have changed.

Want to spend less money on gas and give those EEEEEEEEEEEEEEVIIIIIILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL oil companies less profits?

    Right. But way too obvious.
