Converting to metric
This last weekend I was reminded at the pace we are converting to metric. I was on I-75 in Ohio when I saw a sign that said:

Unfortuanately with the number of defense plants, high tech industry located here...they have long since converted to this "commie" form of measurement...and it may just be a matter of decades ([:D]) that us under educated "folk" with only one degree...may very well be forced to follow .

The metric system is a good system.......For other countries. This is America and we use a different system here. There is no need for us to follow the rest of the world like a bunch of sheep. 0 -
How funny it is reading this post, after just visiting with my brother that is a Cav. Scout in yes the U.S. Army. Funny how he talks using all metric values, sounds like the people of america are the only ones not converting.[:0] 0 -
i think it is more of fear out of stupidity why there is friction about changing, metric system is very easy itself, but the hard part comes into play when you have to convert standard, which is really easy once you learn how to do that
i don't have a problem with it, i think it is reverse of most thoughts here on it, it is not going backwards, it is going forward0 -

My oldest daughter just brought something to my attention as to how the metric system has cheated many good Americans. A fifth of bourbon is actually 757ml but the bottles currently available are only 750ml in size, causing us to be cheated! If the Gun Broker gang can't keep us in Iraq, give GW a third term or make English the only language ever to be heard in this country, they may be able to use the short filled whisky bottles to keep the metric system the hell out of the United States! A hogs head of fuel will get my Mercedes 280 leagues and that should be good enough for anyone! 0 -
I can't believe you never noticed the bourbon bottles were smaller after the change. That's some pretty poor mileage by the way, even for a Mercedes 280. [:D] 0 -

I never really thought much about those missing 7ml until now but if you drank around 108 750ml bottles of bourbon you are being cheated out of nearly one full bottle! It is my oldest daughter who has the MB 230, I drive an S-500 and it gets about 20 MPG in mixed driving...Not really too bad at all when you consider the size of car.0 -
I always thought a hogshead was more of a Spanish and French measurement. But anyway, one hogshead to 280 leagues comes out to about 13.5 MPG.
The half gallon to ML switch is where you really take a beating on the bourbon. [:D]0 -

The metric system is the natural and easy way to count.
Sense it works on units of 10. Not 1, 12 &3 like the SAE system
This means the human body is metric,
Wile counting on your fingers and toes how far do you get before you must start over?

Maybe far eastern or southeastern europe. But I've been through a lot of little pi$$ant towns in Germany and Austria; and almost universally, farmer Johann could boast a satellite dish and high speed internet. They're just as industrialized and post-industrialized as we are.
As to metrics, I lived in Europe (Salzburg) for a year. I was able to wrap my head around liters, to where I didn't need to convert. I never got kilograms. I never got meters. Km/h I got. So it didn't entirely catch with me....0 -

Yeah, feet and inches. Uh-huh. How about rods, sections, furlongs and chains? Long tons? How many ounces in a 1/3 cup? How many cups to a gallon? And how many sq ft in a sq mile- or an acre? I started using meters and kilometers in the US Army in the 1960s- and not many of us here weigh powder in drams. It takes about 10 minutes to learn the metric system. If you are really slow. Doug Wilson - Whitworth is a form of Thread pitch or threads per inch, NOT a system of measurement.
Whitworth fastener diameters are measured in "inches".
How about BSC or BSF instead?0 -
