Road apples! No one has convinced anyone of anything on this point. Those who have faith, have it, and those who do not do not. That is not likely to change by argument.
When people tell me they have a personal realtionship with a guy who has been dead for 2000 years, I can only wonder what they have been smoking.0 -

This often goes along with the attitude that one can do or say whaterer one chooses to toward or against another, but they can flip through the book to find the appropriate verse (notwithstanding the context in which it was written) to justify their actions, or have a "get out of jail free card" because they are "forgiven," as in "I prayed on it and Jesus said He forgives me."0 -

The partying and giving of gifts during the celebration of the Soltice has been around longer than Christianity. They borrowed christmas from the pagens in order to bring them to their way of belief..
No where in the bible does it say to celebrate this thing called Christmas. In fact Christmas isnt even mentioned in the bible. It is something man made up..0 -
Maybe once meant "Christ's Mass" ??
Doug0 -
"Christ's Mass" is not in the bible either.. 0 -

When a person says they have prayed for forgiveness, that is an acknowledgement that they know what they did was wrong. Think about it.
Christians are a lot like real people. Some of us are a real pain in the ass.0 -

If what you are saying is Santa Claus, Christmas Trees, Christmas Parties, oyster stuffing and gift giving have nothing to do with Christmas, my response is "I knew that".
What's your point.0 -

Ya got it backward James: Christmas has nothing to do with religion untill they borrowed it from the pagen rituals.. Man made christmas a religious celebration. The early church stole it from others.. 0 -

Sometimes. But wouldn't it be more effective to ask forgiveness from the person who was wronged, or actually show how sorry you are by doing something to effect the situation?0 -

I guess you could put it that way, but it's not entirely accurate. That would have been a good strategy if the early Christians had been that sophisticated.
More accurately, a good many of the early Christians were former pagans. When they became Christians they continued some of their pagan practices, and they were incorporated into Christian traditions.
Nobody really knows when Christ was born. Most likely it was in the Spring, but that is guesswork. It doesn't really matter. 25 December is as good a day as any. "The early Church stole it from others.." Well, not exactly. Not any more that the Jews "stole" Christmas from the Christians when they decided to make Chanukah a bigger Holiday so their children would have something to celebrate around Christmas time, or the guy who invented Quonset "stole" it from the Christians and Jews when he set it up to fall close to Christmas and Chanukah.
Christmas is both a religious and a secular celebration. Most Christians take part in the secular part of the Holiday, but it doesn't have anything to do with being Christian. i.e., Santa Claus, Christmas Trees, Christmas Parties, oyster stuffing and gift giving. The parts you say the Christians "stole" from the pagans don't belong to the Christians. They just happen to take place at the same time. Last I heard the pagans still have all their celebrations.0 -

Yeah, it would be more "effective" but it would be a dumb move. If you ask forgiveness of the person you wronged, you might not get a very pleasent answer. That victim of yours might not only refuse to forgive you but might give you a dose of anger you will not like. In addition, by asking the victim for forgiveness, you just might be confessing to something that they do not know you did. Can't take that chance.
Plus, when you talk to God, you can come back and claim he said anything you want him to have said. And noone can dare to call you a liar. But if you contact the victim, other people will know, or can know, what was said.0 -

Actually, they have a pretty good guess based on the fact that the Romans kept pretty good records. Remember why Joseph and Mary went to Bethlehem? Because Ceasar Agustus decreed that a census should be taken. It was also the first census while Quirnius was governor of Syria. So, based on this, and taking into account how long it would take to get to Bethlehem from Nazarath, historians can deduce about the time that Jesus was born (give or take a month).0
