Ernie the Bat. (Pics)

This guy was hiding in my motorcycle cover. I covered up the scooter for the year, and he fell out. I didn't see him when it happened. I heard this high squeaking sound and kept looking around for it. I squatted down where the cover had been and didn't see anything. I was looking for a baby mouse or something. Then, I turned around an saw his wing, and his mouth open. I believe he was hibernating in the cover. Anyways, I moved him behind a side table that in the garage, then on top of the garage door when I got back. the door stays open all the time. So, he should be ok up there.

    Yeah, little bastage attached my finger when I picked him up. Maybe he was just hanging to it instinctively, but it still kind creeped me out.

    I don't know. I didn't look that closely. I'll check him tomorrow. I may have stepped on him when I moved the cover. I hope he's ok.

    What a beautiful little guy! Thank you for saving him.
    When I was building my log house in Georgia, I had the roof on, but no windows.
    I went to work one morning, and there was a bat hanging from the ceiling. He looked just like Ernie.
    I got my thick leather gloves and picked him up. These are beautiful and marvelous animals. The fur is chocolate brown, just beautiful.
    I pulled his wing out to full extension. It is amazing to see the network of delicate bones and thin translucent skin that composes his wing.
    I took my little bat to the window and tossed him out, he flew off.
    Ernie's wing doesn't look broken to me, it looks like the one I caught.

    Bats are the friend of mankind, they eat enormous numbers of mosquitoes.

    Cool pics. I watch the bats at dusk flying around the light in the
    yard eating moths and misquitos. Fun to watch.

    I had one get into my storage building one night when I left the door open.
    Did the same as you,........heavy leather gloves.
    They won't bite you as long as you're gentle with them,.......they just kind of cling to your glove.
    I think they are cool too!

    Status report: Ernie wasn't on the door this morning. I checked around the rafters in the garage. I didn't see him anywhere, so it looks like he flew off. I'm glad he's ok.

    I've collected bats from telephone lines and unused chimneys. If they are behaving normally, a slim chance they have rabies. They require warm places to hang out. Sixty degrees is the lowest I've seen them active and cold weather will kill them. I lost 4 baby bats because they got off the heating pad and couldn't get back on.

    Aspen, there seems to be quite a few of the critters in Manhattan, KS; particularly around campus.

    Found one hanging around (literally) on a door hinge in Cardwell (the math and physics building)
    saw another flying up and down the halls of the big building across from the student union (forget the name now, it's used by the architects and a couple arts and sciences depts; used to be old engineering building)

    supposedly there's a butt-ton of them in Bluemont hall

    I live behind the parking lot by East Stadium. I didn't know campus was that thick with them, but I'm not surprised. I don't know if Ernie flew off or what. He's not in the garage, that's for sure.
