What would happen if you fired a standard, everyday shot shell from a plastic flare pistol ??

Most of them are some oddball caliber so you can't do that. If you get it done, it would probably cause damage to the pistol and/or the shooter. 0 -

I bet it would work... Once! Shotgun powder is relatively slow burning powder and compared to a lot of other powders it doesn't really generate what I would consider alot of pressure. With one of those little flare guns I think a significant portion of the powder wouldn't have time to fully burn before it just turned into one giant muzzle flash. If I knew a place where I could rig one up and safely risk the explosion in an appropriately controled atmosphere, I'd try it. No way would I pull that trigger without some sort of mechanical device to do it for me though! 0 -
I saw a bunch of 12 Ga. flare pistols in Wal-Mart today, and it set my pinhead mind thinking...

Dave W., as long as you were in the Navy, I'm surprised you haven't seen somebody do it. Generally speaking, in two or three enlistments you'll see about every stunt in the book. If you're lucky you can get out of the way of most of them. [:D] 0 -

I think those youre talking about only take those mini 1 3/4 shotshells; so a normal 12 ga would stick out way too far for comfort. I think mini 'aguilla' shells may work, but is not recommended.0 -

some of the fastest handgun powders where design for shot shells, and in this particular case even the lowest measured 12 gauge still has enough pressure to kill, not trying to flame but i find that entire statement very silly0 -
Well , No way would I shoot a regular 12 gauge in a flare gun , back to the theory of using the correct gun/caliber in a gun in good cond. ? But , I do know a guy who shoots the 'short' 12 gauge rounds in a 'steel' flare gun with one of the barrel (steel) inserts , Not a Plastic type (wallyworld) flare gun ??? Go Figure ???

You are missing a PRIME opportunity here.
Give the flaregun to Rosie O'Fatass. Give her the flaregun as a "prop" -- obviously since it is plastic it is just a toy, and since it is colorful it really is just a toy.
With her expertise on guns, she should be able to readily identify what a "real" gun is versus a toy.
What will you learn? That a flare gun and an elephant gun are one in the same.0 -

I would agree. Redot, which I use for loading trap rounds, is very fast burning. I've even used it in pistol rounds like .38 special. I used to load wadcutters with red dot using an empty .22 LR shell as a measure.
I've built a few home made shotguns using black gas pipe and I'm probably lucky they didnt blow up on me. I've seen and heard of folks using wood and bamboo for barrels in homemade shotguns but I dont think its a good idea.
I've seen those flare guns at Wall mart. i wouldnt want to be holding one in my hand when it went off with any sort of real shotgun shell.0 -

I use to fish with this old guy that had a 10 gauge flare gun in his boat. He kept a set of flairs and a few 10 gauge shotgun shells. I asked him one day what it was for and he told me snakes. It was one of the old style flare guns that were all metal. I asked him if he had ever tried it and he said he did. Said he tried it one time and it wasn't something you wanted to practice with. Needless I never asked to try it out. 0 -
Shotgun powders are FAST burning, in fact may shotgun powders are used in handgun loads.
Rifle powders are slower.
If its a plastic flare gun, get away.0 -
