Pax Americana...
I posted this on another thread, and wanted to give it its' own place.
I'm rae\\eally interested in what y'all think of the ideas I've presented here.
The way we should fight our wars, is by creating and using an American Foreign Legion, much like the French.
We should declare Iraq a colony or protectorate, draft Iraqis into the Foriegn Legion, take the oil, and use the Foriegn Legion as an instrument to project our policies worldwide.
They would not be allowed in the United States until after they have served their five years. Upon Honorably completing the five years, they should be granted American citizenship, and allowed to move to the states, as long as they comply with any other immigration criteria.
Is that Imperialism ?? HELL yes !! Colonial Imperialism worked for centuries, and can work again. When Africa and South America were essentially European colonies, things were much more stable and smoother for those countries.
At least this would exemplify honest, straightforward policies, and we would not be in our current position of dishonest, misleading and dishonorable policies that make us the laughingstock of the world.
Oh, yeah... we would also have cheap gas, and people like the two-bit french would be a little more reluctant to jerk us around.
PAX AMERICANA.
It could be done, it should be done.

Might as well tear up the constitution while we're at it...0 -
I really don't think it has much, if anything, to do with Constitutionally protected American Citizens.
After all, I married a foriegner. She's from California - at least one of them is.

America was not designed to be an empire... 0 -
Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Phillipines, Panama, Hawaii, Alaska - on and on.

America wasn't designed to be many of the things she has turned into. 0 -
Good point!!

Problem:
1) We're already drafting Iraqis to fight for us. By and large, they're no damned good without our support.
2) Offering Iraqis American citizenship and residency for fighting for their own country - who's getting the better deal here?
3) Imperialism engenders more resentment and unrest than it settles. This is 2007, not 1807.
4) It cannot be done, therefore it should not be done.0 -
I will not be an imperial boot-licker, Darth 0 -
Mr. Wilson: America was doing just fine until we decided to get involved in world politics. Then we got ourselves into messes like Vietnam and Iraq. Apparently you haven't learned from the French, British, Belgians, and others - all of whom had colonial empires, and all of whom LOST them. Colonialism only works if you're willing to brutalize the population - once the will to do that is gone, then the empire crumbles due to nationalistic impulses.
Imperialism is at odds with the founding principles of this nation - that of self-determination and freedom. It would be extremely hypocritical of us to preach freedom and democracy while at the same time strong-arming weaker nations into submission.
We should go back to our foreign policy pre-1900. Protect only ourselves. Control immigration extremely tightly. Have a civil defense corps that is NOT used for nation building or other political ends - only for self-defense.
Lastly, the concept of a foreign legion is cowardly. We might as well just scrap the Army and hire a bunch of foreign mercenaries to do our fighting.0 -
How about this idea?
Create a new 500 man elite fighting unit called the United States Redneck Special Forces (USRSF). Drop off these country boys in Iraq. Tell them the following facts about terrorists:
1. The season opened today.
2. There is no bag limit.
3. They taste just like chicken.
4. They don't like beer, pickup trucks, country music, or Jesus.
5. They are directly responsible for the death of Dale Earnhardt
It'll be over in a week!0 -
Gunslinger,
500?
No, that would be too cruel.
500 red necks against twenty million Iraqis wouldn't be a fight, it'd be mass murder.[:D][;)]0 -
Moisonetc. -
I'd sign up for that, as well.
Isn't all volunteer Armed Services equivalent to a bunch of mercenaries with a single client ??

I once suggested on these boards that we should simply hire mercenaries to do our bidding (it would be cheaper in the long run) and was given the usual "treatment". Truning Iraq into a colony, conscripting it's people and taking their only valuable resource (oil) would be a dream come true for the extremsits in that country, who would quickly become nationalists. If we simply want to sieze a good sized country with plenty of people and lots of oil; Mexico is a whole lot closer. 0 -

Absolutely not! Good Lord...[V]0 -
Well, at one time, the sun never set on the British Empire. Then all their colonies kicked their asses, ourselves included. Having colonies is a bad idea, because people in said colonies want to govern themselves, regardless of whether they'll be able to succeed or not. 0 -
I guess that would be one way of nation building.
