Can someone explain City Slicker?
I saw the term used in another thread chuckled because is there really any real true live Jeremiah Johnsons left anymore? Any grizzly Adams still roaming the hills? I doubt that your basic modern country boy really even knows and understands the grizzly bear.
I wonder where the line is that seperates a country boy from a sity slicker?

A few years ago I went to a cattle branding because I'd never seen it done. I felt a bit like a city slicker when, while trying to hold the front end of a calf down, I got lifted completely off the ground. The rancher on horseback who was roping the calves just laughed at me and explained how to get more leverage on the calf's forelimbs and thus keep it securely pinned.
Still, I felt less like a city slicker than the other fellow who'd come to see the branding....and didn't help at all. I was pretty embarrassed on his behalf. It's all relative.0 -
If your SUV has only been driven in the dirt when parking for your kids game, etc. then you are a city slicker.
I think that when you could easily consider it a nice unexpected break and vacation if you were stuck somewhere un-paved in non-emergency conditions alone for just 2 or 3 days with minimal supplies/preparation then you aren't a city slicker. The closer to absolutely miserable you are when you get "back" to civilization, the closer to a city slicker you are - lets face it, no one is perfect. If you don't come back at all, or don't put yourself in a position where you can get "stuck" like that (for whatever reason) then you are definately a city slicker.0 -

i felt like a city slicker when i went to jersey and stayed with my moms sister,(on a farm), and i got waken up at 4:30 am to go help move all these damn cows from one side of the farm to the other. My cousin(bo) was herding them on this little 50cc dirtbike! 0 -

I have camped on the ground with only the equipment that was available during the 1750's. During the nicer months no problem, but during January when it is -4 it does become something that if nothing else is a learning experience. I have done it more than once during the winter and you learn what you need to stay alive for the weekend. After it was all said and done, stayed comfy, but was ready to get back to the 21st century and get warm. 0 -
well my dad grew up on a farm, I wish the family would have kept it, after the moved away, no one around to run things, /i can still remember growing up, I had one pair of shoes, during the week, our feet was dirt black. we had to wash them before coming in the house. we were part squirrel, and rabbit. we stayed outside all day. we had a black and white tv, radio. by god we loved those days. 0 -

To some rural folks City Slicker is a description that fits a well dressed man, usually one that is wearing a suit who is a stranger to the community. It is often applied in a wary or unflattering manner. 0 -
Remember the newbie who posted a few weeks ago and said he was buying some land in the country and wanted to know what was the best gun for protection against bears, etc, came across as being scared to be outdoors? That's a city slicker. 0 -
Not to folks who came from my neck of the woods. The term "Slicker" in this description, to my knowledge, is someone who is smooth or sharp, like a card or pool shark. I do believe that it has a meaning similar to that of Carpetbaggers, in that one should use caution in dealing with a well dressed person that is a stranger, or be prepared to pay serious consequences should you trust them. 0 -
