    Instead of trying to push the watter out of the way, the nose disc forces the water to form a air bubble at the nose of the torp. It's easier to push the nose through air than it is water (longer range) in addation to being more stable (reduced load on the gyro's).

    There is a "super cavitating" bullet out tha uses the same idea (the creator baised it on the torp) to help keep the bullet penatrating deeper on a straight line instead of being slowed and pushed out of line. IIRC that bullet is called the "Lutz super cavatator".

    I guess I miss-phrased my question.

    Are any countries armed with, or contemplating arming with, super cavitating torpedoes ??

    I read an article a few years ago, maybe in Popular Science, that I seem to recall, said Russia had them.

    My understanding is that their speed is about 10 times that of our current torpedoes, and that they are rocket powered ??

    These are propelled by a rocket engine, meaning they consume fuel at a high rate. Due to this their range isn't that much different than a standard torpedo. The big difference here is that super cavitating torpedos travel at over 200mph through the water, compared with around 40 mph for the standard types.

    These are basically underwater missiles, but have so far been unguided due to the difficulty of manipulating the gases to maintain the bubble cavity as course changes are made. Other countries (Germany, Russia, China and claimed by Iran) have had such torpedos for years but we've been working on guided versions for the past decade using our thrust vectoring technology.

    Due to their short "flight time" even unguided versions can be a serious threat. Picture a large ship trying to evade such a high speed incoming threat fired from 5 miles. By the time launch is detected and it's course is plotted you'd only have about a minute until impact. Now think about multiple firings of these at a ship. Bad times there. Keeping any possible launch platforms beyond such a torpedo's range capability is currently the best bet.
