my wife wants a double action revolver 6 in barrel 38/357 and she only wants to spend under 500.00 any ideas thanks

And for the record, I'm not a big ruger fan, but remember that the Colts and S&Ws are the reason they had to start downloading the .357 so as to accomodate those less durable revolvers.[}:)]0 -

I'm not sure, but I think you could pick up a S&W 686 with a 6-in barrel in stainless for under $500, lightly used, if not new. I got mine NIB about ten years ago for $420.
I had to send mine back for repair a couple weeks ago, but S&W paid shipping both ways, did not charge for the repair and I expect it back on my doorstep tomorrow...less than two weeks after I sent it out! The problem looked like this:

If I'm not happy with what is in the box I get tomorrow, be sure that I will post about it, whine about it, gripe about it, and otherwise go on about how unhappy I am. Right now, though, I think it's an awesome gun; everything I have heard about S&W customer service suggests that I will be happy with what I see in the box tomorrow, and if so I will agree that S&W has awesome customer service.
I hope that is the case, because I have loved this revolver since the day I first owned it. The trigger is sweet, the grips are sweet, it shoots better than I do.....as far as guns go, this is my first love.
I understand that Taurus is making high quality S&W clones for much less $$$, but I have very little experience with Taurus. If cash is a factor (or if my post scared you) you might also look into Taurus.0 -
You can beat on just about any Ruger handgun (semi auto's too) with a 10 pound sludge hammer and it will still work. The only breakage trouble I've EVER heard of any in Ruger handgun is an occasional firing pin snap on older P series pistols. But then, if you dry fire any handgun long enough, the firing pin will likely break eventually.
There have been some safety recalls on some of their revolvers, but not because something "broke" It was an inherent manufacturing flaw (not "breakable", but still unsafe)
Most modern revolvers, with the exception of old western replicas, are double action. Mind you, I said most.
I'd look for a Ruger, Taurus, or Rossi if you're shooting for less than $500... Taurus model 608SS6 has a 6.5" barrel, 8 shot cylinder, and adjustable rear sight. Pretty heavy though at 51 ounces. Stainless. You might be able to get a dealer to sell you one for $5000 -

Definitely take a look at Taurus. They've been a hot topic lately. I trust them enough to carry an automatic as my primary carry gun. Many others do as well. I believe their Revolvers are nicer than their autos. The lifetime warranty means they're seriously backing their product.0 -

I'm gonna say this about Ruger revolvers:
I believe that they're mostly indestructible (and that's an awesome feature), but.....
the geometry of the Ruger grip seems to be designed by SATAN himself. I will fire a .44 revolver, but I will not fire a .44 revolver made by Ruger (I've tried it five times and decided I didn't need to do it again).
Seriously, if Ruger could come up with a revolver grip that didn't draw blood, they'd have me as a loyal customer in the revolver market.
They already own me as far as .22 semi-auto pistols go.

I have the same problem with the Super Blackhawk 44-mag. It was a simple fix... a great pair of Hogue rubber grips. Now, it is like holding a stick of butter -- no worries about your hands whatsoever.
BTW, I, too, sat there wondering who the heck would use such a powerful handgun with such a crappy litte grip, and I don't have large hands.0 -

My choices, in order:
Smith 66
Smith 19
Smith 686.
Definitely upgrade to a nice molded rubber grip like a Hogue or Pachmayr if the gun doesn't have one. Its worth every penny.
You should be able to find *any* of these used for under $500 right here on Gunbroker. Used police trade in fixed sight Smith 65s can be found for under $300 sometimes.
I have nothing against Taurus or Ruger, but Smiths are just smoother and nicer to shoot, IMO. They also hold their value a bit better and are a bit easier to sell, if that's an issue (it won't be if you buy a used gun).
If you think your wife will actually fire so much full house 357 ammo that she is likely to wear out her revolver (we're talking 10-15,000 rounds of full 357 magnum), then go for the 686, its a little stronger.
Getting back to reality, if you're really firing that much 357 ammo, you're spending several thousand dollars on ammo. By that point the cost of a new gun (or fixing your old one) is negligible in comparison.0 -
1. Whatever, go for a set of Pacs or Hogue rubber grips. Worth every penny.
2. Besides the S&W, Colts, Rugers, and Tauruses, take a look at the Dan Wessons. They are a bit less money, durable as all get out, have good actions. And leave you the option of swapping barrels in about 30 seconds. Bought one in 1976, have run at least truckload of ammo thru it, and is still a tackdriver.0 -
My wife has a S&W lady smith model 65. I comes with pretty rosewood grips and lady smith etched on the frame. Its satin stainless and very nice. Shoots great and is a good fit for her hand. S&W also makes a model 36 ladysmith in 38 special and several 640 type frames models.
I added some rubber grips to her model 65 which is a 357 mag by the way and she is a happy camper.
Take her to a gun shop that has a nice supply of S&W models and let her choose a model that fits her hand. Then look for the model on the GB auction or other sources where you can get your price range.
You have a lot of options in the $500 price range. Good Luck.[:0][:0]

I have a Ruger GP-100 with a 6 inch barrel and I highly recommend it to anyone. Their built like a tank and very accurate and pleasent to shoot as well. 0 -
