Identity Theft...
I haven't personally been a victim, and hope that never happen's. I just think our law enforcement need's to really throw the book at people that do this kinda thing. I'm hearing more and more about it everyday. I myself destroy any and all paperwork that could be used to gain information about me. Have any of yall been a victim of identity theft?

When you recieve a tele-marketer call here is what I recomend, right after you answer ask the caller for there name, then ask the caller in rapid fire questions, could I have your social security number, and a major credit card number, when they get totally flustred then tell them look we are just going to have to hang up, because it doesn't look to me like your going to cooperate. 0 -

Yep! a lady used my wifes name and credit card to purchase $2.500 computer,the info was gathered from one purchase we made (shopping channel) The lady had the same name but lived in a different state.
It took start to finish about three months of bull crap to straighten out.

We never found out how she gathered the info needed to pull it off. Sucks![}:)]0 -
We had our mail stolen out of the mailbox at the curb. The theives got a credit card statement, which is what they are all looking for. It had five of those blank checks that they then used to cash and rip us off. They also charged some goodies on the card. But we caught it quickly and were made whole by the credit card companies.
The police just tell you that they don't even bother to investigate unless you have some evidence to tie someone to the crime. One of the neighbors caught a group stealing mail out of the boxes and got a license plate and the police were not even interested. Its very hard to get the portland police to arrest car theives much less the snatch and grab mail theives. I guess the DA does not want to fill the jails with these folks until they nail them multiple times.0 -
David Nunn in West Long Branch, New Jersey opened a Home Depot account using my SSN. Home Depot was NO HELP in trying to straighten it out, and their security people even lied to the police in West Long Branch and told them I had acknowledged responsibility for the bill. 0 -
IF you have someone stealing mail from mailboxes, go to the folks that deal with that- The US Postal Inspection Service- highest conviction rate of any Fed law enforcement agency. 0 -

Unfortunately and until specific new Federal laws are created, the best that the system can do is to prosecute offenders for criminal activity as is defined under existing laws within a State. They know that and so they escape more serious punishments. Same with computer fraud and hacking. It stinks but that's pretty much what we have to work with. 0 -
There is a deadbeat about 30 miles west of me that has the same name as me. When I lived down by St. Louis I would get phone calls from creditors and collection agencies wanting money. They didn't know I was from the approximate area originally. I would give the collectors "messages" to tell the guy.
I moved back to the area. I used a popular bank with many branches in all the towns. MISTAKE! Some woman walks in and wants to cash a check from her own bank. She has no account at the bank. No problem. The guy with her shows identification (my name). When the check bounces, the bank takes a couple hundred dollars out of my account. The bank was kind enough to send me a notification.
We settled the matter. I closed all accounts and went to another bank.
There is also another guy a few towns east of me about my age that has the same name except it ends with a "son" instead of an "sen". There is also a woman in the county east of here that has the same name as my wife. She also does the same job as my wife in an adjoining county. Mrs. Plaid said it was weird to talk to her and he woman introduces herself as from Grundy County's office and said my wife's name. I've wondered if these two people are married.

Holy crap. I've typed my name in and it listed me under every town I've lived in during the past 15 years!
Plus it correctly named my wife, sister and mother along with their age.
Found the deadbeat's name. Same spelling for the last name but middle initial is "F". He's listed in LaSalle/Peru. Same County but 2 exits west on interstate 80. Age not listed, but my bank does have a branch in that town. (It's where the forgery was committed.)0 -
There is a gentleman with my exact name with a one letter spelling difference and our DOB's are three days apart. I was detained once by security at Sears until they discovered they were holding the wrong guy.
The store manager about passed out when I threw my badge on his desk and told him he was making a big mistake. The difference between myself and the other guy, he is an African American and has 8 felony convictions........
The store mananger supplied me with a gift certificate that covered my kids school clothes that fall and some other perks for the day.
Every time I purchase a gun, I get asked the extra questions before the instant check goes though.0 -
Wow what are the odds. There is a guy in the burbs of Chicago that has the same exact name as me. Same middle initial also. His younger sister also has the same middle initial as my sister. Both are a couple years younger than me and my sister. Weird.
You know, if I got the guys bank name, I could make a withdrawal like the deadbeat in LaSalle. Identity fraud looks pretty easy. Buy the dudes credit report and go to his bank and wipe him out. What are the odds the teller would actually know what the guy looks like. I mean, no one at my bank knows what I look like.

It doesn't matter how much you shred or how little info you give out. The problem is that in this information are your information is already out there. For about $12 a month there are services that will not only monitor but repair you credit (included prepaid legal). Having both services included is the key. I highly recommend everyone look into it. 0 -
Never been a victim and only have known one or two people that had been victims, but cant remember who they were. Yes, their need to be more strict punishments for these offenders. Many times I believe the victims are actually the ones that do the most work in seeking justice/clearing their name, but new laws, that wont happen soon.
My name is common especially my last name. I have a cousin with the same exact name he is 8 years younger than me. When I was younger my parents took me to get a library card and they refused to give me one because according to their computer I already had one. Wrong, it was my cousin.0 -

Interesting looking deeper to usa-people-search.com. THat guy with the same name only a different middle initial...anyway, no known adress is available for any "Samuel F Thompsen" (not the real name) They list the name four times with locations. All are in Northern Illinois, but address or phone numbers are available. Most all names listed (for other names) include addresses and phone numbers. Sounds fishy. 0 -
