Stockcar racing, now NASCAR and nowhere near stock, was once all about the edge in the car and the guts in the driver. Now, it's about who can cheat and not get caught. I've lost my respect for the whole bunch of them.
it is the politically correct society we live in, everybody has to have the same thing so no one has an advantage

The big three used to produce stock cars with guts so they could win in "Stock" car racing. Now all they have to do is reproduce the body shape on a tubular frame and follow the restriction rules. Now, they can't even do that.

"Stock"...hmmmm...I don't see many V6 front wheel drive NASCAR race cars out on the racetrack...not to mention with the Car of Tomorrow" they all look alike.

The late 80's - early 90's were the last good years of NASCAR IMHO

    Fireball Roberts and Freddy Lorenzen.

426 Wedges, 427 Side oilers, 427 Mystery motors, Olds motors, Pontiac motors...

No intake restrictors, big wings, different bodies.

And,,,oh, yeah...once-in-awhile some of these iron Men would get hurt.

Sorry to enlighten y'all, but the REAL NASCAR has been dead for about 35 years.

I'm sorry you guys will never see it.

We could probably tell some really creative lies to each other... often called "bench racing".

Was there ever a time when you could special order what was raced at Daytona?

....never. As soon as the [teams] got ahold of their cars, they were "tweaked". Well beyond the ken of the average motorist. Both in dollars spent and expertise.

And talk about cheating? The art was to not get caught cheating. I rest my case if anyone remembers Smokey Unick. He admitted that only about one in ten of his illegal modifications were ever noticed by the race officials.

And I'm talking 50's thru the mid 60's here, folks. This post takes me down memory lane. Been the topic of discussion many times in the past. Joe

I think you could get a lot closer then, than you can now - especially if you are talking about street legal.

ASSCAR rating are down. I guess people don't like this new stuff as much as ASSCAR claims.

quote:I don't think there is one single part on the current cars that is "stock".

I don't know about on the new "COT", but on the current "old" car, the deck lids had to be shaped like the stock lids. But that is about all I can think of that is remotely close to "stock." The only changes that NASCAR has made that I like are the safety innovations. If you look inside the car Fireball Roberts drove in 1962 compared to one today, there is no comparison! Roberts used a stock seat, with small amounts of padding added here or there for support. No head rest. No roll cage to speak of. So I do like the new safety "stuff", but sure wish they would go back to a real "stock" car.

Here's my all time favorite "stock" car, as driven as my all time favorite driver...Bobby Issac. Died of a heart attack in a race car in 1977 at the age of 45. Hell of a driver!

Try attending your local short track races, they normaly run several classes of car and put on a show once a week.
This is my local track (6 miles from home) www.whittemorespeedway.net , and I pass a couple of others on my commute (Autocity (Mt. Morris), Dixie (Bridgeport) and Standish (Standish).
There is good racing around, you just need to look in your local phone book to find it.
