I'm sure someone will chime in with the exact quote/reference, but basically it was Bill disconuinuing the sale of a high capacity magazine for their mini-14/30's. When asked, he was quoted as saying, something to the affect of, "the average citizen doesn't need high cap. mags." Or something like that.

Although I don't agree with everything Bill Ruger did calling him a commie is a bit extreme!!![:0]

Ruger has proven to be a very successful arms company --- during a time period when others were going or went downhill. Whether or not you agree with Bill Ruger, you cannot dispute the fact that he (or someone) was a marketing genius. Colt was discontinuing the old thumbbuster and Ruger introduced the single six, then the blackhawk, etc. Then a single shot rifle --- who would buy one of those? Me, me, me, and many others. Back when shiny finishes and monte carlo stocks were the norm, the M77 came out with a traditional classic stock and not plastic looking finish. I, along with many more, lined to to buy them.

Rugers are not the highest quality firearms that are available but I have a soft spot in my heart for them.

I think it is pointless for people to Keep bringing up Bill Ruger as a Gun Control Advocate. He is dead and gone.

but look at the legacy he left. the gun control crowd STILL uses him, cites him and champions him as a "responsible" gun maker who believed in gun control. he has negativly affected the entire debate and was responsible for gun owners losing gun rights.

Fortunately for all of us the gun ban he championed only had a ten year lifespan - unlike some other gun measures passed and proposed by the GOP.

So you are saying Bill Ruger was responsible for the 1994 assault weapons ban?

Which GOP bans are you refering to?

During the 1994 debate about the assault weapon ban Bill Ruger testified before Congress in support of banning "assault weapons" and high capacity magazines. The gun banners in Congress desperately needed a high profile member of the firearms community to be on their side and Ruger gave them one.

Some have suspected that he literally "sold out," trading his support for having the one "AW" gun he made (Mini 14) excluded from the list of banned guns (which it was) and maybe for government contracts.

Bill Ruger was a great gun designed and a smart businessman who will always be remembered by many, including me, as a turncoat who stabbed legitimate gun owners in the back. I will never buy another new Ruger no matter what guns they make or how they are priced. I don't care that he's dead. Ruger can go out of business for all I care.

Colt went downhill because it had some damn serious quality control problems, it made one stinker of a pistol, and it did not realize how polymer pistols would remake the pistol market.

I remember years ago a fellow writing to Gun Tests about how he got his new Colt 1911 and promptly sent it off to the gunsmith to have it "tuned"--to have it made functional. He saw nothing wrong with this--he did it with all his Colt 1911s. When a compansy is consistently selling a product that is going to need $200-$300 of work before it will function reliably, it's not going to be doing great business.

Yes, their revolvers are top shelf, but take a $600 Ruger and give it $200 of handfitting and you'll have a gun pretty much equal to a Python, for probably a lower price.

Colt is resting on its laurels and has been for years.

EMM- Please, please, please don't try to suggest that on the whole the GOP has been worse on gun control than the Dems. That would be an insane assertion.

Colt makes their money from the Govt contract they have to supply their AR'S.

The amount made through the custom shop and limited offerings of pistols and revolvers to the general public doesn't amount to squat.

The troubles they had in the 80's with strikes broke their back.

Ruger made many enemies regarding the AWB...but give the guy credit..

he started a gun company from nothing, used new manufacturing processes, designed cheap and reliable guns, and stayed solvent when other gun companies were going down the tubes.

I hope he will be remembered for the good things he did, instead of the one stupid one

Anyone who, or whose company, takes a stand against our Constitution is not on my "Got to buy one" list.

I'll consider buying (new)rugers when the company repudiates the (dead) old man's stance.

    Ronald Reagan.

You can thank Reagan for the law that prohibits you from owning a newly manufactured NFA weapon. That's why they're so dang expensive. You can only purchase one made before a certain year (I believe 1986 but could be wrong on the exact year).

    George Bush 41
The NRA did NOT endorse Bush 41 in 1992 due to HIS executive order banning the importation of the AK-47 and UZI.

The GOP has done FAR more to hurt gun owners who are interested in acquiring NFA weapons who live in states that permit their ownership and also semi-auto AK-47's and UZI's. At least the Clinton ban had a sunset.

I'm a registered Republican but I'm not a BLIND registered republican

Rumor has it, too, that Bill Ruger had a Mini-14 on the drawing board that used an en bloc magazine like a Garand, just in case it was necessary. He was a businessman, not a gun man.

Yes, thats quite funny check the voting record of all the Democrats in the senate and you will see who wants to outlaw gun ownership. [:0][:0]

But then Demos always point the finger the other direction and attempt to deflect any accountability.[:0]

Don- I said "on the whole." Of course there have been Republican gun grabbers but on the whole (including being part of the party platform) gun control is a favorite Democrat issue.

On the 1986 MG ban, that wasn't Reagan's idea. That was a negotiated trade-off to eliminate record-keeping on ammo sales and allow ammo to be sold via mail order which had been illegal since 1968. If you don't like the trade, OK. But the MG ban wasn't something dreamed up by Reagan or any other Republican. That's what the Democrats demanded in exchange for supporting the relaxation on the ammo restrictions.

    Don

As Saxonpig just stated, the "MG ban of 86" is an amendment to the 1986 FOPA (introduced at the last minute before the bill came up for a vote) by anti-gun Democrats. There was a lot of pressure on pro-gun legislators and President Reagan to sign the bill into law to repeal some of the more idiotic provisions of the 1968 GCA. By way of example, some of you may remember having to show ID and sign for a box of .22LR (you had to sign for any handgun ammo and .22's can be used in a handgun).

Ohh I remember, I also remember the ak's & uzi's with thumbhole stocks coming in as soon as Bush I signed his order, I might have some flyers from nationwide sporting good with the thumb hole mak-90's on one page, and the stocks they took off on the opposite page[:D].
I think it worse when Bob Dole did not filibuster the crime bill[V].
