    You can program any key you want.. First you must learn how to program, I suggest C. If you are talking about the f1-f12 keys they are usually preprogrammed by individual applications for example f1 is usually help in any windows application.

    I formerly did it when running under DOS, but would like to do it under XP, easily.

    I do not think you can do this. Alternately, you can buy a keyboard with programmable keys that allow you to do what you want. The keyboard needs a companion program running in the background.

    XP won't let you do it, although your keyboard might allow you to do so depending on it's software. There are a couple of programs out there which are supposed to let you get around XP but I have no experience with any of them.
