Letter to Bush...
This is a letter that my Daughter Deanna sent to the prez today.

Dear President Bush,
I am greatly concerned with the situation currently encountered by our country involving the high unemployment of illegal immigrants. I realize that there is no solution which will appease everyone, but perhaps some reasonable compromise can be reached. I am nothing more than a humble, everyday citizen; however I would like to bring to your attention a solution to high unemployment used during the Great Depression. Public works projects provided steady jobs for millions of people when the economy was suffering in every way imaginable, and it may be possible to adapt this solution to our situation today.
There are approximately 10 million illegal immigrants residing in the United States. The majority of these people are currently unemployed. In the 1930's there was mass unemployment during the Great Depression. President Franklin D. Roosevelt helped alleviate this situation by employing the masses with public works projects, a program referred to as "The New Deal". With the current state of decay of our national infrastructure (example: highways, bridges, and borders), we could easily use these illegal immigrants to make needed repairs and improvements while greatly reducing unemployment in this demographic. We could tax the wages earned by these newly employed people and would gain a record of whom they are as opposed to the uncertainty we are presently dealing with, the eventual goal being that they would become naturalized citizens who have served their country.
Thank you for your consideration of my ideas, I hope that you will contemplate what I have said and look into it further. Our country could benefit immensely from this generally negatively viewed situation, and is that not the greatest accomplishment of a leader - progress and advancement? I truly believe in the greatness of our country, and as the President, you have the power to make a difference. Change must be faced with courage and strength, two characteristics that I believe you not only possess, but can draw out in others. The high unemployment among this group of people appears to be a wonderful opportunity for you to boldly lead our country in a direction many would not expect, but a direction in which our citizens can see the logic. Thank you again for you time and attention to my thoughts.

Constructin work can and should go to Americans. While I applaud your daughter's compassion and the obvious thought and effort she put into her proposal, I can only say that such a "New Deal" ultimately rewards and benefits the wrong demographic.
To handle the problem of illegal immigrants, we must tackle everything about this nation that enables them to resist assimilation. It's not that we fear new Americans, we fear (and justly so) foreign invaders.
Right now illegals do not pay taxes, but get all the benefits we can give them. it is more to their benefit to remain illegal than to go legit. We must reverse that situation before we talk about naturalizing them because without the desire to assimilate, all our efforts will be for naught.0 -
We had recently had a discussion about the Depression, the New Deal, The WPA and the CCC.
Her view is that this work is not being done, we have extremely low unemployment, and as a Nation, we could get a bargain on accomplishing these things that need to be done.
Her views are not mine, as you may know.
I just thought it is a pretty creative approach, for a Child with no life experience,and I wanted to have the forum take a look at it.

Good for your daughter for voicing her opinions. Hopefully she'll still think it's worthwhile after this experience.
For now, she'll get an e-mail back from the white-house from a computerized autoresponder. I know this from experience. Even if you specifically request NO response rather than the auto-responder, you get the autoresponder. I've tried everything from sweet-talking the president and his staff to cussing the president and his staff, to cussing their auto-responder.....all with similar results. I suppose somebody reads the incoming e-mail, but it never results in a real response and given how this administration runs itself, I doubt it figures at all into policy decisions.
I've sent enough mail to our current POTUS to know that it's a worthless endeavor. He's on his own tricycle, and damn-all--he's staying on it!

Sorry to be the urinator on the parade, but.....well, we have the administration that the people of the US elected and from what I can see, the fact that he doesn't have to be worried about getting re-elected just expands his sense of "I'll do what I want!"
Maybe during the next cycle it will be worth telling the White House what we think. For now, I don't think the White House gives a damn, 'cause GW KNOWS what is right, 'cause GOD told him, and that's the way it's going to be.

While I don't agree with all of what your daughter wrote, I commend her for trying to do what she can to make her voice heard. If there were many more children willing to take an interest in what is going on in our country, it would be a much better place in a few years.
Most kids (mine included) are just interested in getting to the next level in the newest video game that comes out.0 -

I am happy that your daughter wrote POTUS. Too few citizens bother to do so -- they'd rather sit on their asses and complain to their friends.
Saying that, I'll politely disagree with your daughter. The New Deal is the father of socialism in this country and has put us in the situation that we're in today, where the illegals come on over because they can get a gubmint handout.
But, congratulate your daughter for acting like a responsible citizen and not just another whiner.0 -

I don't agree with her conclusions, at all, and I was caught by surprise by her. I was pleased with her ability to take a couple of different concepts and put them together for this result. I'd never seen a suggestion like this from anyone else.
It's my belief that FDR may have been the single biggest contributor to our Nation's current sorry state.
Deanna is 17, a junior in high school. She is a second degree Brown Belt in Shoa Lin Kempo (karate), about 6 months from Black Belt achievement. She is pretty and quite bright, carrying a 4.0 GPA in all Advanced Placement studies. She competes with her horses in both 4H and Oregon High School Equestrian Teams. She has collected swords and knives since she was 9, and guns since 12. She is a mediocre shot at best. She is going to apply to Annapolis and wants to be a Hornet driver. She pretty much holds her Brothers and Sister in awe.
She decided to study Karate at 15 when she found out that she couldn't have a CCW until 21 (she was pretty angry about that), and no knife fighting instructors would take her on until 18.
Most of her political views are very Conservative. I think she now needs to integrate her idealism with what the world is really like.
I'm not trying to brag about her (of course not), but wanted you all to see the framework from which her letter came.

I think that it is great that she wrote that letter and is becoming involved in the process. I am sure she has had to do some research to learn about the data she included in her letter.
Young people who can turn off the TV and video games and get involved are rare and should be encouraged and commended. Tell her I think she is doing the country a great service.
A great public works project today could be a national effort to get us off the foreign oil. To hire the unemployed to install more windmills, solar farms, ethonal farming and production, biodesiel production, nuke plants, sea power plants and coal production plants would be a worthwhile effort.
Yes some of these sources will cause internal pricing to rise but all that money will be spent within the US not sent to the middle east and to Chavez and other dictatorships throughout the world.
The bi-product of this effort will be more enviorment friendly sources of energy.

With all due respect to your daughter, I don't think the solution to the immigration debacle lies in reinstituting an avowedly socialist (and useless and expensive) works project based on faulty Keynesian economics.
But good for her for writing the prez. I send letters and call my rep's and senator's office from time to time, but never written the commander in chief.0 -
Politically, Deanna is a strong Conservative. She looked at the problems we have with criminal mexicans, viewed from an historical perspective, and tried to arrive at a pragmatic, and doable solution.
Her point to me was that we aren't solving the problems (criminal mexicans & infrastucture) now, and the solutions now being touted as alternatives, would not be able to be implemented for one reason or another.
I don't agree, but this gave me some food for thought.
There has to be an American solution, that has not yet been offerred, that could happen.
