Work related stress
The past few years my job has become extremely stressful. I had to have surgery last January that kept me out of work for three weeks. I haven't caught up with the back log yet. In March I was out for a week after I was hospitalized with a stubborn kidney stone. The past few weeks I have been experiencing sharp pains in my abdomen that get worse when I eat or drink. Yesterday I contacted my surgeon who told me to come right into his office (Not so easy seeing how his office is 100 miles away). He told me he thought my gallbladder was giving me problems, and I may have to be admitted. I came prepared to stay, but the ultrasound proved I didn't have gallstones. Instead I now have stomach ulcers. Now I am taking a lot of ulcer medication. My boss said he was glad to see me back at work, but when I told him I had ulcers he just turned and walked away. I wish he would have taken his darn ulcers with him, because he is the reason I have them.[:(!]

Time to find another form of work that you enjoy. Live is too short to be miserable in a job with an azzhole boss that is on an ego trip.
I am retired since 03 and have zero stress! Life is living with a lot less income but hey, life is short, live in the moment!

Good advice, but Law Enforcment has been all I have done for the past 31 years. I have 28 years of service here, and I can't retire until I am 56. That gives me 5 more years till retirement if I can make it. With my luck I will soon be found like Jerry Farwell was found today "dead at my desk".[B)]

The plain and simple of it is that I need to put bread on the table and a roof over the heads of my family. I'll have to just deal with it, and hope I can make to the finish line. And, if I don't my family will be taken care of. Sad, but that is the only bright light at the end of this tunnel.[xx(]

Then you need to find a way to deal with the stress,.........and more importantly, don't let the individual you are getting the most pressure from, get to you! Blank most of it out, and simply do your job. Lets be real,.......you are a civil servant, that after that period of time, would take you murdering your superior to get fired. Maybe a transfer to another part of the force to do something different! To have a heart attack is not the answer.
That said you can probably do the five years standing on your head. I suggest you find some kind of a diversion outside of the job to make you happy and to look forward to your off hours.
Join a health club, buy a Harley and join HOGs, coach a childrens league, hiking club, get a girfriend, restore corvettes, repair guns, make holsters, something that lets your mind just go into freewheel mode and relax.0 -

Every one who works for a living seems to call their boss an ass hole. Why? I came up through the ranks by going to school nights, working my ass off to raise a family and get ahead. I have been a boss for 37 years and I worked very hard for it. I am NOT an ass hole. Yeah I know. While I was hitting the books at night you were sitting in a bar chugging beer and now you didn't get ahead because your boss was an ass hole. Sounds like a good excuse to me. Know how to get along with the boss you call an ass hole? You become tougher and more knowledgeable than he is and take his job. 0 -

Like a bunch of other guys around here are telling you, find a hobby or diversion to take your mind off of the stress. Maybe even set aside a little bit of money each week to devote to this hobby of yours.
If your boss is being a jerk, ask yourself why? Be completely honest, too. If it's something you are doing, can you change it? If it's not something you are doing, why sweat it? It makes as much sense to get tied up in knots over some a**hole's attitude problem as it does to cuss out the clouds for raining on you.
Talk to your family, too, if you haven't already. If you're stressing out this much, they're bound to have noticed. Sometimes talking with loved ones helps. I know it always helps me when I get stressed.0 -

Oh please. Most bosses get where they are from sucking up to their bosses who got where they are from sucking up to their bosses. Or from sleeping with them. As to getting where I am, I have been on my own since I was 17 years old, when I enlisted in the Army. 4 college degrees later, all earned at night while working full time, and I make a very nice living. And I am not a p***k like many of the bosses are. And a good many of them are just incompetent, because they got where they are from WHO they knew not WHAT they knew. Or they just put in their time and get automatically promoted due to the rules. Why do you think the government is so screwed up? The boss I have right now has been removed from many command positions because she is incompetent and a real b***h. But the gov can't get rid of her because of the rules, so they just shuffle her to a new position until too many people complain about her then they move her again. That is the reality of bosses today.0 -
Well I do have a hobby, but I recently moved, and my shop is not in order to make my scrimshaw powder horns. It is also turkey season, and I am walking my butt off three days a week now chasing after these cagey birds. I like the buy a Harley idea, but I would have to get rid of my wife first. Right now she is about the only thing that is keeping my head straight, so she stays.[:)] The girlfriend idea is out of the question. Not that I don't like sex, I do. I just like it with one girl, and that is my wife.[;)]

Back in 1994 the Department of the Army removed my job classification from the Law Enforcement retirement of 20 years, and placed us all in the regular 30 year retirement. We appealed this decision but lost the case. So, I have been working for the US Government now for 28 plus years, and I can not retire until I reach 56 years of age. That gives me 5 more years to go. Recently we were removed from the GS rankings of most government employees, and placed into the new NSPS rating system. Under the NSPS system I am rated at a higher pay band than is my second line supervisor. In fact my immediate supervisor and I are the only ones in our department who are in the pay band we are in and the band we are in is higher than every other supervisor we work with. This is the underlying problem. There seems to be a mass attempt at making our lives hard in hopes we ether quit, or take another job somewhere else. If we do, then our positions, and pay band would be open for the taking.[|)]

E-mails from U.S. military officers in Iraq and Afghanistan have exposed an alarming, politically correct practice that is endangering the lives of troops serving in those conflict zones.
According to the officers, U.S. troops are being forced to carry unloaded weapons on most U.S. bases because commanders are more worried about a "negligent" discharge than the very real likelihood of a terrorist attack by an insider on the base. "This is a gross failure of leadership, and in all likelihood has contributed to the U.S. casualty rate," the official said.
The officer in Iraq said the unloaded-gun rule is a symptom of bigger military leadership problems, especially in the Army.
"Unfortunately, many military leaders are little more than managers, and many of those have consciously chosen to reduce themselves to the level of permanent administrator, because it is safer for their careers than risking real decision-making," he said.
The officer warned that the leadership crisis in the Army is producing a "stilted, uninspired Army."
"Such a sterile, hyper-politicized, ponderous, disconnected Army is no match for an inspired, committed, agile, flexible force, even one smaller and less technologically sophisticated," he said of the Islamic terrorist enemy.
A soldier in Afghanistan said the no-loaded-weapons rule is true for bases there as well, adding that soldiers are required to unload weapons after returning from "Indian country."
"The idea that anyone, anywhere, would carry firearms for serious social interaction, yet do so with them in any condition other than ready to fire at a moment's notice, is so stupid no 'discussion' appears necessary, at least among the sane," the soldier said.0 -

Before I started what I do now, I was a cop for a few years. Loved the job but hated the dept. When I got hired, the chief had been there for almost 20 years. Guess how long he had been a cop when he was made Chief? 3 years, all in the traffic bureau. Guess how he got to be Chief? He was the Mayor's nephew. Guess how the Mayor made him Chief? He changed the regs to mandate that the Chief had to have a Bachelor's degree and at that time only the Mayor's nephew had the degree. So they demoted the then Chief and promoted this Sgt with 3 years of experience to Chief. And he then promoted all his friends into the Command staff. From what the good older cops told me, he just ruined that dept. They were all just hanging on until retirement, and the dept. could not keep younger cops. The FOP finally got rid of him by voting no confidence in him repeatedly and the city hired a retired Baltimore Major as Chief. He only lasted 2 years, as the old Chief's cronnies were all still there and did not like him trying to change their good old boy system. He got disgusted and took a Chief's job down near Baltimore. That dept is still a mess and has major problems with recruiting and retention.0 -
800 you sure do seem to have a problem with authority. Just from your jumping up and down yelling about all the suck up bosses I can tell that YOU are the one with the problem. You are one of those people that think they can do any job better than their boss no matter what the job is. Most people with an attitude like yours never go very far. Kind of feel sorry for you. 0 -

HAHAHAHAHA. I don't have any problem with authority at all. And I have a thick stack of Certificates and Letters of Commendation I have gotten over the past 20 or so years. From the military, the police dept, and from the gov't agency I work for now. And I make a very nice living doing what I do. I do have a problem with imbeciles that get promoted just because of who they know. Just watch some news, the reports of nepotism and favorism are rampant. That is a huge problem in general and in the government arena in particular. Sounds like you may be one of those types of people that don't mind getting promoted by just who you know.0 -

Seriously, I do not hate authority at all. I spent 11 years in the military (active and Guard time) and a few more years as a cop. And have been working for an agency that is set up much like the military for many years now. I just dislike a system where people get promoted just because of who they know or who they are related to or who they are sleeping with. I am 43 and make the equivalant of a GS-15 on the Scientific & Professional (ST) grade wage scale plus the 18.59% locality pay for the D.C. area [:D] And I don't suck up.0 -
In that case you must have done a lot of sucking up to get to that point. Hey, I'm just reading what you said before. What with all your degrees, Military service and police dept. You couldn't have been on the job very long. Therefore it would take a lot of sucking up in a short period of time to be as rich as you are at the age of 43. Do the things you say happen? Of course they do. In my case however I stayed with the same company for 47 years and worked hard. Thats the only way I know. [:)] 0 -

Find a place to focus the stress so it goes out of your body; a hobby, hunting, shooting, nuclear phsyics and stuff like that. After it is gone you will be amazed how good you feel!0 -
Did they check to see if your ulcers are from a bacteria? It may be from that last hospital stay. A close friend was in the hospital for 4 days and three weeks later started with minor stomach pain and reflux. This continued to get worse over the next couple of months to the point he went to the emergency room one night. The young resident listen to his story and the story that his doctors were telling him about it being stress related. He ordered a scope of his stomach and test of the ulcers and found they were from a strong bacteria that he most likely got from that last hospital stay. After 4 weeks of treatment of horse pill antibiotics and several months of zantac he is OK. It was not stress related, we have stressfull jobs but that was not the cause. You may need to see a stomach doctor. 0 -
I think you'd best see a shrink to help you process the stress.
When you are in the position of being near retirement with no viable options, the sadism comes out. Add to it that you're blocking a desirable title, making your boss increase pressure on you to vacate it.
Take notes and build a case of harassment or age discrimination.
Filing a grievance might also be an option.0
