Contemplating...
Whatever happened to the "counter culture" ??
In the 20s flappers, prohibition, bathtub gin and the rise of organized crime.
In the 30's there was the beginning of music oriented alternative lifestyle - Jazz, big bands and marijuana.
In the 40's, even though we were kinda preoccupied with WWII, we had crooners, zoot suits and jive.
The 50s saw rock n rollers create the beginning of a musical revolution, with beatniks and bongos, and freedom riders.
The 60s saw Folk rock, the British invasion, Viet Nam, the hippie (peace) movement and LSD.
The 70s had us looking at acid rock speed, cocaine, malt liquor and fortified wine, and the sophistication and maturation of rock.
And it appears to me that all those cultural dynamics disappeared utterly, in the 80s, up til now.
I could be wrong, but it looks to me like a defined counter culture just doesn't exist any more.
How come ??
Is America now just too fat, dumb, and happy to support a serious "anti" government (sort of) bunch of folks ?? No defining music ?? No "cause" for the young people to take up ??
Am I missing something REALLY big ???
